August 2011 Scally "this is the best gillingham squad I have seen" February 2012 Ronnie Moore "this is the worst gillingham side I have seen" What went wrong?
Amazing how there is such a different contrast, I think certain players have just got too settled in.
if and its a massive unimpossible if, the squad stayed completely fit and playing at their best/ atleast to their potential i dont think theres a doubt we have a good squad, however we have as per usal had injuries coinciding with players being completely out of form for long periods of the season and just as we solve one issue i.e. scoring goals the other end of the team switch off. in summary potentially one of the best gills squads for a long time however way too inconsistant!!
I think even on our good run we never were in control of most matches and we always lose shakey away from home ( even at Torquay- that match could have gone either way)This is now hess's team, he has built it, and if that team collectively ( if not individually) is arguablly the worst Gillingham side for many years then what conclusions should be drawn?
Theres a rumour doing the rounds that if we don't get to the play offs,Hess is history. Thats according to someone who's a friend of someone who knows Scally,so make of it what you will. Mark Robson is fancied to come back as manager
Somebody is widely berated as having very little experience as a football league manager to...someone who has no experience as a football league manager. Can't see that myself.
Scally has got history of employing managers with no football league managerial experience. Remember Pulis ,Jepson and Stimson
Did Scally really say this? He must surely have meant the best squad assembled for the bottom division; and even then I would fancy both Pulis promotion team and Stimsons play off winners to beat this current team, though the Pulis team might struggle to keep 11 players on the pitch in the current climate, I am not sure any of the current crop would get in the Pulis team other than a fully fit Simon King. Barcham and Jackson give the Stimsons team the edge too.
Thanks for posting the link Belfast, I dont recall seeing this at the time, I can only assume he was trying to 'big up' the players, because to suggest that this squad was even close to the championship side or even the ones that played at the top of league 1 is just bizarre. Can anyone seriously say that any of our players now are on a par with - Wallace, King, Taylor, Asaba or Akinbiyi and thats just the first 5 forwards that came into my head...maybe he was referring to size of squad, but even then there really is no comparison.
and as for Ronnie Moore he clearly never saw the Roeder/ Smillie teams sides that struggled to stay in the league in the 90s!
Yes I think scaly may have been trying to boost season ticket sales. But you can't make statements like that and not expect expectation levels to jump. As for Moore , agreed but Rotherham and ourselves have been through the leagues together over the last decade so he has seen a few teams to base it on! As always the truth lies in between. Today we swung back some way towards scales assessment at least!
