I see Newcastle have submitted an offer for Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

First report i read was a season long loan, with a view to purchase at the end of the season.

Just read another one that it is a full blown bid for a permanent move.

Wonder if Liverpool will recoup half of what they paid for him. Cant see it myself, i dont think he ( or any other footballer for that matter ) was ever worth £35 million.

I wonder if the geordie fans will welcome him back, i seem to remember at the time, them been slightly bitter.

Sure it will come out in the next few days !

I think Carroll leaving Newcastle was good for them.. they got 2 new strikers who are much better and for much less.

Newcastle might just be playing a bit of a game, trying to unsettle Liverpool etc... Probably wasn't a serious offer.

Though, I can see Carroll leaving. It seems like he doesn't really fit the plans that Brendan Rodgers has. If they got an offer close to £20m, I imagine that they would take it - because although it seems like a big loss to take, it is better than having him on the bench all season for his value to decrease, or playing in a system that doesn't suit him, making his value decrease.

The way he'd been at Newcastle, £18m would have been forgivable for Liverpool.

Present day - he's still only 23 so £12m sounds about right to me.

They offered a season long loan with a purchase at the end, for half what they sold him for.

They are never going to recoup what they paid. A season long loan takes him another year nearer the end of his contract (not sure how long his contract was when he signed?) playing to his strengths I'm sure he'd be a great asset, thought he played well in the Euros and his header against Sweden was a beauty. Liverpool never have played to his strengths, shame really, not really the players fault that he has a £35m transfer value hanging round his neck!

Anyone but Newcastle might have been successful with that kind of bid. If you're Liverpool you're already averse to taking that kind of deal from another English club that you're going to be competing for European places with, but why do Newcastle need a loan periood to start with in the first place? The whole point of doing that is to ensure the player fits in and works well the squad without having any problems settling into the area before you commit your money. They've not changed the squad/style of play that much since he left.

Carroll is actually a great old-style striker but doesn't fit in well with modern day footballing strategies at the top level, maybe he should go to Bundesliga? If Gomez can score a ****-load of goals over there than there's a place for Carroll somewhere like Dortmund

Newcastle have better strikers than Carroll, Ba and Cisse will be incredible next season, if Ba stays that is, don't see why Newcastle would want him back at all

He doesn't like being backup option at Liverpool to Suarez, why would he warm the bench at another club?

Because in a PL season you don't play 2 strikers and never change the team so he'd get games.

How many times did Newcastle drop Ba or Cisse since they were in the team, not many, their partnership is something Carroll won't break

They aren't going to be in ridiculously good form all the time and there'll be injuries, suspensions, and needs for rest.
Without a third capable striker they have to stick Shola Ameobi out there. I'm sure Pardew would rather avoid that.

They might be getting someone like Rhodes, a striker who can build into a better player with occasional game time, it would be better to have a promising young player who could come on now and again rather than a pisshead that who sit and moan when he didn't get played.

That's like asking us how often we've dropped Rosenior. They haven't had anybody suitable to replace them in the team. They'll be pretty ****ed when it comes round to ACN as well if they don't improve their squad.

    You don't pay £20m for "suitable back-up".
