Yeah, I mean it's not like we beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge or comfortably beat Man Utd or anything. Oh wait. <doh>

Our defence didn't become a 'shambles'. That's ridiculous. Yes, it was more solid with Taylor in the side, but even with Williamson, we still had a good defence which helped us reach 5th place. If we had a 'shambles' of a defence, we wouldn't have got 5th. Simple as that.

Top 6 teams against top 6 teams is always a bit of a gamble. You never quite know what will happen, as last season showed. However, we don't need much in that department to reach the positions we're happy with. A few losses, a few draws and a win or two against the top 4 teams is ample, as I'm sure it would be for the likes of yourselves, Spurs and so on.

As for Arsenal getting 1st, just no. I like you guys, but it ain't gonna happen. Even if you do strengthen despite losing RVP, Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea will all strengthen heavily as well. I'm not sure why you've failed to take that into account.

I genuinely have no idea how Spurs will do. Out of all of the teams in the PL, Spurs are the team I'm the least certain about.

AVB is still just too much of an uncertainty for me and I don't know how well their signings will perform.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think we are going to finish above Chelsea? Or are you being nice because we sold you RVP?

To be honest I don't think Man Utd are that good. Not impressed by their midfield, and we're yet to see how RVP works out for them. We have seen that he can be kack for very good teams (Netherlands), he's not the universal adapt-to-any-team type.

I do think Man City are favorites for the title, barring some silly player drama that disrupts the team.

But if we don't **** up the first 8 weeks of the season like last year, we're already 12 to 15 points up. 2nd place is very realistic, despite RVP leaving. We might have lost our best striker, but we have a lot more options and types of strikers now.

How many times the previous season have we been in a situation 80 minutes into the game with no real alternative to sub on that would help us break defenses?

I understand why people think we'll slip to mid table, but that's only because they don't rate our fringe players. The reason we finished 5th was because when our best players were injured, our fringe players performed.

We haven't got as small of a squad as a lot of people believe.

All we need now is another center back, and maybe a fullback, and we're fine IMO.

A lot is going to depend this year on this http://ladyarse.co.uk/2012/04/premier-league-injury-table-17/

If a team has only 50 player/days, like City did, then any of about 8 teams have a chance.

Man City and Man U are on roughly even terms. One of them very likely will win the league. Spurs, Arsenal and Chelsea are all mystery packages. So much has changed at each club you'd have to be prescient or lucky to guess how they'll do. I agree Spurs may be the biggest mystery of all, considering they still need certainly a striker, very likely a playmaker and a couple of others. They still have a lot of talent at the other positions, though, again, we also don't know how AVB will do with it. On balance, thinking anyone other than Chelsea will challenge the Mancs is probably wishful thinking. Chelsea has the squad strength, though they'll need to somehow find a playing style and gel, which seems unlikely. They may even finish as poorly as last year, but I doubt it. Unlike Spurs and Arsenal, Newcastle will start with more or less the same team they had last year, which should give them an advantage, other things being equal, at least in the early going. Spurs Newcastle opener should tell us more--unless Spurs make big additions after the game.

I also think that Everton will massively struggle this season, finishing around the relegation area.

You have Southampton finishing 8th! I wish, however I think the original post might be nearer the mark as we have a number in the squad who were with Saints at the wrong end of League 1 two seasons ago. A lot will depend on being able to get the necessary quality during the two transfer windows.

The promoted teams that do the best in their first season play with confidence and style - Swansea, Blackpool. I think Southampton will at the very least, stay up. Obviously, you know a lot more than me but I see lots of youngsters in your team ready to make the step up - Lallana, Cork, Schneiderlin. If Grant Holt can score goals in this league, there's no reason why Lambert, Sharp and Barnard can't.
