    Afternoon all

With the transfer deadline fast approaching and lots of speculation around Beavon departing and who (if anyone??) we'll bring in, I wanted to know what people think about clubs not disclosing the fees they paid and recieved for players. This seems to be commonplace nowadays.

On one hand I think its rubbish as it means fans (the people that pay the transfer fees indirectly!) are kept in the dark about how much their players are being sold. Also means we cant judge the people that make these decisions in our club based on fees they have demanded or offered etc.

On the other hand, I wonder whether divulging all fees would mean that every club had a rough idea how much each club could spend or would take for a player which could end up with bigger clubs taking full advantage.

    What do we reckon?

I can see some benefits for the clubs but, as a fan, they are a bad thing and very annoying. Its not like the fees are often very big at our level so what difference does it make. We've been speculating all summer how much we will get for Beavon and if it goes undisclosed then we will never get an answer.

Difficult one. One could argue why should any fees be disclosed.

However, I prefer openness. Not disclosing could indicate an embarrassment at having to accept a low figure or a coyness at advertising how much they had to cough up. The team should be aware of and be happy with the fee being paid for a new player as it is bound to come to light at some stage. The same with wages. If players do not accept that they have a lower value (financially) than another player resentment will cause loss of morale and affect results. I used to have to balance salaries of 100 staff and had an open door for anyone who wanted to discuss why their salary and/or rise was less than another's. Never had a problem because everyone was assessed fairly. And that included "loanees".

When the clubs file their annual accounts I would guess there is a line in there somewhere that talks about transfers? Might not give the exact answer but could help you make a guess. But think it should be transparent.

Jock, in clubs (companies) the size of Wycombe there wouldnt be much disclosure in the accounts in terms of specifics on transfers. It is likely you would just see a one line total for all transfer fees earned for the season. Clubs that are a plc would have a lot more disclosure.

It is a difficult one really, as for clubs that are privately owned why should they have to tell the world how they trade? However, clubs that are trust owned, there is definitely more of a case of transparency.

For me it's not a case of whether one should or shouldn't, it's more whether one chooses to or chooses not to. And I think, why would I choose to and why would I choose not to. If openness causes problems then something is wrong. If nothing is wrong then one can be open, That leads me towards openness.
