Great article if you have about 2 days spare to read it!

Possibly a bit misleading to suggest he "attempted to summarise in a 15-point plan."

Informative, if wordy, and it could've used less of the H&G history to concentrate on where FSG are likely to be going.

On ticket prices he omits or is unaware that Red Sox ticket prices were spread wider, from $20-$200. That's about £12.50 for the cheapest tickets.

I also think his point about football and baseball being different is moot. Kenwright didn't have a problem moving from musical theatre, the Glazers didn't come from Shoppingmallball and David Sullivan's daily does of sport was birds in shorts.

I think this is probably the most important bit:

"FSG’s preferred model is one with top quality stars supplemented by home grown youngsters, as outlined by Henry, “We have been successful through spending and through securing and developing young players.” Tom Werner added, “We certainly feel we can do a better job bringing in more players that are home grown”, as he promised to invest in the scouting network."

A lot of work must have gone into that article, but it was a very informative read! Although I do feel the article itself lacked proper direction, it stated facts and what FSG may plan on doing but there was little on the way of prediction (i.e. whether the author thought a new stadium should/may be built), which is what I wanted to know.

The graphs themselves were very interesting and I think show how far we have fallen recently, there was a time only 4-5 years ago when we would have been in the top 3-4 clubs in the world for revenue and reputation, though it seems H&G set us right back in terms of commercial and match day profits, whilst turning us into a selling club in the last 2 years.

The worst part of it I think is that not being in the CL has hit us hard financially (to the tune of around £35m a year.) It made me think that if we hadn't been in the CL for those last couple of H+G seasons, we'd probably be goners. Also, imagine our transfer activity if we didn't have that £70m!

Agree completely. Them two tossers have a lot to answer for. If things hadn't changed when they did we may well not have a football club now.

This much is obvious to even the most casual Red Sox observer. So not the Mancs who think FSG have no money, then. They'll break the bank to get a star player they really want. And especially if it pisses off the Yankees.

    http://ftrsports.com/2010/12/red-sox-sign-carl-crawford-completely-f-yanks/

The Red Sox came out of no where to sign Carl Crawford to 7 year $142 million dollar deal, making him the highest paid outfielder of all-time.

    The Red Sox=Yoda.

After the Sox acquired Adrian Gonzalez, the Yankees thought they could sit back and make a nice little 6 year offer to Cliff Lee, and if that didn’t work out they would throw a ton of money at plan B Carl Crawford, while remaining open to signing both. By signing Hot Carl’s services the Sox did more than throw a wrench into the Yankees plans. It is now absolutely imperative that the Yanks sign Cliff Lee, and unfortunately for them, that means they will probably be paying him until he’s 39. That extra year is a big deal considering even Curt Shilling was not really close to being an elite pitcher by the age of 36, as is the case with most power pitchers.

Indeed, this signing got some 'Pool fans spooked pre-January signings that FSG were spending all their resources over there. How wrong were they?

This week in Liverpool, the home of one of England's most beloved but underperforming professional soccer teams, Crawford's just-announced $142 million contract with the Boston Red Sox has been a source of disgruntlement among soccer fans from Twitter to the pubs along Mathew Street.

The problem: the Liverpool team's new owner, the Fenway Sports Group, is the same entity that owns the Red Sox. And with the January transfer period when soccer clubs buy and sell players fast approaching, Liverpudlians are worried that the bank vault has been swept out in the name of baseball.

"I wouldn't know Carl Crawford from Cindy Crawford so it doesn't mean anything to me," said Luke Smith, a 28-year-old graphic designer and member of a Liverpool fan group, "but I'd be happy if they gave [Liverpool manager Roy] Hodgson $42 million to spend, never mind $142 million."

Chris Whelan, a 49-year-old Liverpool, said: "It's all very well spending all that money on a shortstop or whatever, but we haven't had a decent left-back for 12 years."
