Lucas Leiva wins player of the year award.

    http://www.liverpoolfc.tv/news/latest-news/lucas-scoops-2010-11-award

Upon being presented with the award at Melwood, Lucas told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I am very happy and really proud to have been picked by the fans.

"It shows they really appreciate the work I am doing for the team and I will remain the same - always giving 100 per cent in every single game and trying to achieve good things for this club, where I feel really good and want to be a winner.

"I think I am improving every single season, but of course this season has been special as an individual for me because I played with consistency. That's what I was looking for in the previous seasons."

He added: "I am really happy with the way I played and I would like to thank my teammates, without them I wouldn't get this kind of award, the staff for helping me every single day on the pitch to improve my abilities, and the fans because to be picked by them is really, really important for me."

The presentation of the award completes a turnaround in fortunes for Lucas, who by his own admission faced initial difficulties in trying to adapt to English football after arriving from Gremio in 2007.

Nonetheless, he believes he emerged a stronger player and person - something he proved on the pitch in 2010-11.

"I wouldn't have expected this (in my first season)," Lucas acknowledged. "The way I started my career at Liverpool wasn't the easiest, but as I have said before, I wouldn't change anything.

"The difficult times just made me stronger and stronger and I tried to improve all the time. That's what I am doing now.

"I am looking forward to next season and will try to come back better than I finished this season and try to help Liverpool to achieve good things.

"I would like to thank all the fans who voted for me. I am sure next season we will try to make all the fans happy and that's why we are here - to try and give them success."

Agreed. He was playing well even when the rest of the team weren't. Unquestionably our best player this season.

Chuffed to bits for him. Now we've just got to get David Ngog making the same kind of step from 22 to 24.

Maybe Spearing. Definitely not N'Gog though. Although I wouldn't be upset if some egg hit my face in a couple of years...

I actualy voted for Kuyt in the end. He's had his best season ever in my opinion. I do agree Lucas has been quality though- I expect him to continue to improve.

Lucas definetly deserves that award, not just the amount of effort he puts in every match but his commitment to the club should be applauded. How often was he our scapegoat as everything turned sour, and now he has shown all his critics what he is made of. The most exciting bit is that he is always striving to better himself, so I can see him getting better and better and possibly peaking at the ripe old age of 30.

Well derserved, absolutely. Lucas is often the one who assists the assister, if you know what I mean. Against Fulham for example, he set up both Suarez and Johnson, who then set up Maxi to score. It tends to go unnoticed a lot, which is why some fans (not just ours) don't always give him the credit he deserves.

His passing is becoming one of his strong points. With Masca it was either a simple sideways pass or hollywood 50yrd ball which he could pull off.

Lucas doesn't have that long high pass in his locker yet but is more effective and attack minded with his passing.

Would we swap Lucas for Mascarano? No way imo.

The same optimism I had for Lucas based on his potential, not just wishful thinking. I was right and the majority were wrong. Do not dismiss my support for David Ngog now when I've just been proved so very, very right about Lucas. Unless you really want to make the same mistake again.

Lucas came to us with some pedigree though, and was highly regarded in Brazil. The one thing he has always shown is commitment.

While I respect your support of Ngog, and appluad you for calling Lucas' potential, I just can't remotely see Ngog doing the same.

Often uncommitted, not highly regarded in France, was bought cheaply, poor technique, not strong or quick.

Im sorry, but there are very few signs suggesting Ngog will develop into a LFC player, and he should be sold in the summer

N'Gog has the odd game where he does some good stuff. The only trouble is, it's about once in every 10 appearances.

Personally I don't see much hope for Ngog,He hasn't improved to the required level. If we get a decent offer we should sell.Minimum of £4 million.
Jay Spearing,I reckon will do a Lucas,He's bursting to show what he can do,and I believe there is still a lot to come from him that he has of yet been shown.
I reckon with the amount of effort Lucas and Spearing put in,in one sense are ''Modern day Kevin Keegans''.
Kevin Keegan was a non talented Coventry reject that worked damn hard to make himself successful. He did so because he was encouraged to by a manager that he worshipped. He still recalls that he had just joined Liverpool and Shanks called him to oneside and said ''Son,you'll play for England''.He said if anyone else had said that to him,he would have laughed, but because it was Shanks,he made sure he did.I reckon Lucas and Spearing in that sense will do well.

Sorry but I'm not buying into the whole Lucas/Spearing love in. Yes - Lucas has improved a lot but he has now (IMO) only reached a standard level. This is the level he should have been playing at 2 years ago. We still see him being bullied by 'in your face' opponents and cannot command a midfield or dictate the tempo.

The central midfield lacks creativity, composure under pressure and a physical presence. Lucas and Spearing struggle when they are pushed for time and space and just simply lack the composure and the ability to retain possession.

I am very happy that Lucas has improved a lot and that people are now appreciating his ability/potential but let's not kid ourselves into believing he is a top central midfielder and that we do not need to strengthen this area.

Disagre on some points mate. Spearing is still learning and needs to improve but Lucas is very good at pushing the play and dictaing tempo I haven't seen him bullied in any games this season.

So I agree a midfield of Lucas and Spearing is not ideal but happy with Lucas and Gerrard. We need cover for Lucas but not a replacement.
