Just noticed this on the BBC. Everyone will have their own opinions but the 2 that stood out to me were the strikers. Shearer, Drogba won but I would have Bergkamp, Henry anyday. Anyone agree/disagree. I think that Rooney being there at all is a joke and that's not a dig just don't think he belongs in that list. MANAGERS' TEAM OF DECADE GK: Edwin van der Sar RB: Gary Neville CB: Nemanja Vidic CB: John Terry LB: Ashley Cole RM: Cristiano Ronaldo CM: Steven Gerrard CM: Paul Scholes LM: Ryan Giggs S: Didier Drogba S: Alan Shearer In attack, Chelsea's Didier Drogba (23%) and former Newcastle star Alan Shearer (23%) were the joint favourites of the managers, seeing off competition from Thierry Henry (17%), Wayne Rooney (20%) and Dennis Bergkamp (10%).
I would not a put Steven Gerrard in the team and I would have picked Thierry Henry over Didier Drogba but its only a list.
How is Henry not in there over Drogba and Shearer? And surely there has got to be a better right back than Gary Neville?
Henry was named player of the decade over Ronaldinho and yet doesn't break the prem managers 11? wtf????????
Remember that this is the choice of English football managers. So Shearer is always going to get a mention, and Henry was always likely to be overlooked after the Hand of Henry incident. And like so many of these type of lists, it's heavily weighted towards the players who have performed well in the latter part of the decade - VDS has been better than Cech for the past three or four years, but prior to 2008 Cech was better imo. You can make the same argument about a fair few players on that list. I'm surprised they didn't do a "Best English" and "Best Foreign" list like they did for the first ten PL years. That might have taken away some of the natural English bias, but then again maybe it's not PC enough in the modern game...
I think Shearer should be in actualy. He was amazing, he didnt just tap them in he smashed them in from 5-35 yards. I would of subbed Drogba for Henry. As much as I hate rat face, he was good back in the day. Probably deserved. Some proper bum loving for VDS at the moment. Not convinced he's the best over the decade.
No way is VDS best over the decade. Cech and Reina would easily come above him IMO.. I nearly suggested the great Dane but realised im in a different decade, earlier i was thinking Fowler too. **** this cheese is good
I know mate same! I originaly put Seaman and Schmeical over him, but thought twice. And of course Fowler!
Can you believe some 'experts' in the mail had Cech down as their buy of the century!? Reina was cheaper I believe and has won the golden gloves 3 seasons in a row (I think). Besides which, we still have 89 years left... But yeah, I'd defo have Henry over Drogba or Shearer. A team go a season unbeaten and don't get ONE place in the 11...
Gerrard? The employee's at the BBC must be smoking some good ****! Kidding Sorry ... Didn't realize this was the Liverpool board.
Some very debatable inclusions. VDS? I would have Cech (reina has been amazing, but cant really have him over Cech as he has only been around for 5 years and has only won the FA cup) Gerrard/Scholes? Not the worst choices, but very debatable with the likes of Viera and Lampard around. Personally, I would have Viera and Gerrard Drogba? no way should he be in it. Shearer is the highest scoring PL player of all time, so I can see the sense in his inclusion (although his prime was arguably over a decade ago). But how the hell is Henry not there? Probably the best PL player of all time, nevermind striker. The narrow-mindedness of some of my fellow englishmen is embarrasing. Yes, he is foreign. Yes, he cheated against Ireland(drogba cheated numerous times in his first few seasons at Chelsea, and still does it to this day). But forget all that. He was the best player to ever grace this league for the last decade, beyond doubt. If he was in his prime today he would be just as valuable as Messi and Ronaldo are in their prime, and there is not doubting they would get in the team. I also loved Bergkamp, but maybe his goalscoring record lets him down a little.
I have to agree, despite the numerous brilliant strikers to have passed through this league, I can name atleast 20 better than Drogba. Hell, I'd even put Cisse before his leg break better than Drogba.
I was going to make the same point. Better than Cech and VDS in a less expensive squad. He won it 3 times, then tied with Cech last season, our bad one and Chelsea's double. Cech only took it on fewer games played. 2004–05 Cech 2005–06 Reina 2006–07 Reina 2007–08 Reina 2008–09[ van der Sar 2009–10 Cech 2010–11 Hart
2008/2009 wasn't Van Der Sar,it was shared between Van Der Sar and Reina...They finished level on the same number of clean sheets, but seeing as Baconface picked the team of the season,Blundesar was in the team of the season.Blundesar was as good as Reina 12 years ago. Secondly if I were picking a team for the last 1O years,I for obvious reasons wouldn't pick Manchester United players.
