Manchester United are set to complete the signing of talented young Uruguayan Guillermo Varela, as revealed by Sportsmail last month. The full-back spent time on trial at Old Trafford in the final weeks of last season, and did enough to impress coaches and earn an offer. Steps had already been made to sign the 20-year-old before David Moyes was confirmed as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson last month.
Varela will arrive in Manchester shortly to complete the deal after a fee of around £1million was agreed with his club, Penarol. The Uruguyan club's treasurer, Rodolfo Catino, is travelling with the player to iron out the final few details. He Tweeted on Wednesday: 'In San Pablo airport waiting for the connection to London, with Guille [Varela] about to board.'

He a right back or a left back?

Not sure we need another LB, and not sure why we'd sign a young promising RB whose only 1-2 years younger than Rafael.

 

LB, for me it's a good move Fabio is no where near his brother's level, Buttner I think could def take that position because Evra may leave and if not he is approaching the end of his career, so he would challenge Buttner in the long term.
My opinion may change if we sign Baines.

 

Good signing imo - Fabio isn't really a true left back imo, more of a utility player who has been moved to the left as his brother is better at right back. I can see Fabio playing on the wings for us in future, particularly if Nani and Valencia struggle to find form, so another left back would be useful to develop for the future. Even if we sign Baines, he probably won't be with us for more than four or five years and will still need another understudy, particularly one who could well end up better than Buttner.

 

Fabio will get shipped out on loan again I think.

 

Maybe Fabio will be used primarily as Rafael's back up? He did start the 2011 CL final at right back. Plus any competition we can get on the wings is a bonus seeing how poor we were out wide last season.
