£5million man already looking like an astute acquisition
While it's very early on to be making such a call, I'll admit to already feeling like I've got a little egg on my face. As previous posts will attest to, I wasnt' that enthused with the idea of signing the ex-Charlton midfielder for a fee around the £5mil mark, however from the (limited) highlights we've seen of the recently-completed Dutch tour it seems he's already bringing something new to the team that we've been lacking in recent years.

Since the departure of Ferrie Bodde, the Swans have lacked a midfielder capable of spotting (and more importantly playing) a killer pass, be it when we're breaking from deep or simply when a player has found space on the opposite flank. Early signs seem good - against Den Haag his exquisite pass found Wayne Routledge who clipped the ball over the keeper for the only goal of the game, while another example of his range of passing could be found earlier in the tour, when he played a lovely ball with the outside of his boot from right to left, finding Rory Donnelly in space out wide (before the youngster finished with aplomb).

When I first compared Shelvey to Bodde a friend asked whether he seems more like a Darren Pratley type of player (but with added passing ability), but Jonjo himself has come out and said he'd prefer to play in a deeper role, dictating play whilst bursting forward occasionally. Where we'll see him line up is down to Laudrup and we'll have to wait and see where the Dane prefers him, but I'd be surprised if we didn't see an increase in the amount of counter-attacks started by a quick ball forward from midfield. We've had plenty of pace to exploit for a while now, but sadly the service hasn't always been there.

Whether Shelvey can replicate Bodde's shooting ability remains to be seen, but apparently he had a go from halfway against Den Haag! Still a way to go, Jonjo...

If he can play like Ferrie did without the injuries I'll be over the moon. He can play an absolute killer of a ball though and not afraid to get stuck in ... a very astute signing in my opinion!

The Liverpool fans all seem really happy to have offloaded him, I think (and hope) they will be proved very wrong, our lot can bring the best out of him...look at Routledge

Just passing by, thought I'd share a bit of insight.

As a Liverpool fan, there is a bit of relief that he's gone, but none of us are denying that he is a decent youngster who can really shine. Most of us just realised that he wasn't ever going to live up to his potential at Liverpool (be it our playing style or manager style or whatever). Maybe he will do it somewhere else. I'm glad he went to Swansea, as you are a very good club in the Prem and will have more aspirations than say, West Brom and the likes. ML is a great manager and will hopefully help him learn a few tricks.

He does have a decent eye for killer balls but does make a lot of wrong choices. He has actually attempted to chip the keeper from halfway, against United on one of his first appearances for the club. It went horribly wrong, and was the moment that I realised he didn't have the mentality of a rational player. This could be a plus, depending on if he develops right with you.

Good luck in the coming season lads.

Can't imagine Leon allowing him to hit hundreds of hopeful killer balls that don't come off and not giving him an earful!

I was quite disappointed when I heard we'd got him, I make a point of not watching Liverpool too often so I openly admit I'm not qualified enough to judge him, I prob saw 2-3 full games he played last season, but since we signed him, I've heard plenty of positives from lots of sources that give me reason to be excited.

Looking forward to him proving my initial thoughts wrong :-D

Jonjo Shelvey has had a fantastic start at Swansea City. Jonjo plays as if he has always been here. He is givning us, something that we didn't have before. He is able to make those vital "killer passes" and he is also able to hit the ball and produce some power shots. I wouldn't be surprised, if he proves to be the bargain of this season for Swansea City. A great signing indeed. I am convinced that Jonjo is going to flourish under M. Laudrup.

it crossed my mind a few days before you posted this...great minds Scott?

The hole left by the evil genius was massive and something most had given up on (have Man U ever replaced Keane despite the billions and years since?)

The mear thought that someone unexpectadly steps in, is unbeliebable and a credit to the young man (who I was hardly the biggest fan initially)

Please let it be! If true, we have one hell of a team.

As I said on a previous thread, I think Jonjo is a fantastic signing for us. He is young, aggressive, likes to go forward and scores goals. How often did Joe Allen do that, great player as he was for us but how often did Joe look dangerous in front of the oppositions goal. Jonjo has so much potential and he is still a kid, just 21. I can't believe we got him unless it was to cover the money Liverpool owed us. Him and Michu in the Mid-field? I see a bucket full of goals coming.
I must admit, the way we ended the season last year was poor and I thought unless we got some serious signings we would struggle this season. Now I am very optimistic. We look to have a strong squad, a proven goalscorer in Bony, Donnelly looked sharp on tour, do you think he will get his chance this season? Competition for places for a change, Ben Davies, Neil Taylor? Who the hell do you pick there? New guys pushing for a starting line up? It just keeps getting better. 6th place at the end of the season, maybe 5th? What do you think?

Guys lets not get over excited, He has had a couple of good games against sides the same level as bloody airbus or Tns. Yes he had a decent half against Den Haag. Who are no better than a good championship side. When he does it against good PL teams then I will start to get excited. Yes it looks promising but just remember the opposition he has played against. I dont want to sound negative, but realistic he still has an awful lot to prove.

As the saying goes, "he can only play what's in front of him". The calibre of opposition wasn't great but his performance in comparison with his team mates, who were also playing the same opposition, was better than most of them.

But, as Trundle says, let's see how he performs when the going gets tougher against better quality opponents. I have a sneaking feeling that he'll do well. This has all the makings of a situation where player and club are right for each other. Hope I'm right because we could have a very good season if it works out that way.

One this is very important though, regardless of whether we thought he'd be any good or not we all have to get behind him. I know we always do get behind our players but now we've got more plastics who are fickle it's even more important to try and get behind all the players. The value of a home crowd cheering on a player can't be summed up.

    Great article this.

I have to say though, let's not compare shelvey with bodde, it killed him being compared to gerrard and it could do the same here comparing him with bodde !

The sentiments are genuine enough and it's something I also thought while watching him play on pre season tour but the reality is that he has not played a competitive game yet, it's very early days for the boy and I believe he suffered under the weight of expectation at Liverpool .

If we can nurture and support him while he makes his mistakes then we will haves racking player on our hands but if we perhaps expect too much from him then it could make it harder for the boy .

Remember that our midfield has been stronger than liverpools over the last few seasons so he will need to work hard to even get into it let alone run the show in it !

I understand the early comparisons they are justified i guess, but for me lets give him a chance to be Jon Jo shelvey not gerrard or bodde <ok>
