Sorry but can't be assed to spend to much time on the match threads at this moment in time so just threw a quick one together.

Very interesting the head between the clubs 46 matches played we both have 17 wins and there has been 12 draws and we have both scored 59 against each other

Anyway this will change on Saturday with Oxford picking up there 18th win. My prediction 3-1 to Oxford.

Recent visits to Oxford:

April 2003 - Oxford 0-1 Rovers - Easter Monday and it was one of the games in which Andy Rammell helped to preserve our football league status. He scored the winner here with an emphatic finish on the volley in the second half. Other than that, we only had one real chance with Chris Llewellyn shooting over the bar and Oxford had spells of pressure with Andy Scott missing their best opportunity.

October 2003 - Oxford 0-0 Rovers - Mainly a rearguard action, as Rovers defended well but couldn't create much going forward.

January 2005 - Oxford 3-2 Rovers - Wins were beginning to dry up under Ian Atkins when he lost in his first game since leaving the Kassam Stadium. They were 2-0 up after just 19 minutes through Lee Bradbury's penalty and Leo Roget's strike. Junior Agogo pulled one back seconds after half-time only for Craig Davies (who has always scored against Rovers) to reestablish their two goal lead, meaning that Richard Walker's late goal was scant consolation.

March 2006 - Oxford 1-0 Rovers - One of 3 straight defeats which were important in our failure to reach the play-offs in that season, Steve Basham's second half penalty gave Conference bound Oxford a narrow victory.

August 2010 - Oxford 6-1 Rovers - A day when I felt truly embarrassed to support Rovers, Oxford, who had just regained their league status, hammered us in the Carling Cup. 4-1 up at half-time with Chris Lines' goal the only decent moment for us, and to add insult to injury they added two second half goals. Oxford's goalscorers were Simon Heslop (2), Matt Green, James Constable (2), and Jack Midson, on a terrible night.

October 2011 - Oxford 3-0 Rovers - Another humbling defeat at Oxford, this time under Paul Buckle. Constable scored twice again with two powerful shots. In between was Peter Leven's penalty, which was awarded for a foul by Byron Anthony.

February 2013 - Oxford 0-2 Rovers - We've only won 1 away game since! A good performance, particularly in the second half, gave us another fine win under John Ward. Lee Brown's penalty came before Eliot Richards' late finish, as the striker slotted the ball under the goalkeeper after being put through on goal.

Actually had to research the ones in 2005 and 2006. Must be losing my touch...

good work guys <ok>

seamge, you lazy git <laugh>
a matter of time, sign of old age that is <laugh>

i think its a no brainer that we will lose. doubt we will keep a clean sheet and we wont score so we will obviously lose!

last week we played chesterfield who were 2nd. now we got oxford who are 1st. its going to be a tough ask.

until we get the striker in the door who can actually score, we will continue to struggle.

did you know none of our strikers have scored this month (october)?

I know it's difficult at the moment with how things are going, but surely you've got to be a bit more positive than that CJS!

Manager on Saturday's game

Bristol Rovers travel to table topping Oxford United this weekend, and John Ward knows that it is going to be a difficult match for his team.

Oxford’s home form has not been as good as their away form, so the manager believes it will be a big game for them as well.

He said: “We know what we are going in to, it is a big game for them, they will want to see it as a home win, but we have got to make that difficult for them.

“They have won five away and two at home, but any club at home wants to do well.

“You always fancy yourself at home, but I guess teams are probably not quite as open there, so that is probably why they have found it a little bit difficult.

“They are the best team in our division at the moment, so we have to play well.”

The manager’s side will be bolstered by new loan signing Chris Beardsley, but Matt Harrold and Lee Brown are both 50/50.

John said: “Matt Harrold and Lee Brown are both 50/50 at the moment, but they are going to come out this morning and give it a go, and we will know if there is a reaction tomorrow.

“Mark McChrystal is not going to be fit, he has a tendonitis problem that will take a few more weeks to recover.”

And although Rovers won at the Kassam Stadium last year, the manager knows that he has to concentrate on the present.

He said: “We know we won there last season, and it was a tough old game, but we have to look at more recent times.

“Some of the guys who played on Saturday for us, probably didn’t play in that came.

“Just because we did it last year doesn’t mean we can do it again, we have to make sure we do what we can do now with the players we have got available.

“We know we will get a big support, we know they will want to get behind the team and see them do well.”

I would like to see Ward put out 3 strikers and really go for it. We will lose if we sit back so might as well lose trying to win IMO

that is being positive, keeping it down to 6 conceded <laugh>

seriously, they are top and we are struggling big time and i actually feel we are worse now than how we were last season under mcghee. we have less points this season under ward than we did last season under mcghee at this point but i think our performances are worse now than under mcghee and i just cant see the light at the end of the tunnel. we cant score. in last 3 games we have only had 5 shots on target. we set up too negative and too defensive hoping we dont concede. we play like how san marino sets up to play to be honest. boot the ball forward and just wait for it to come back at us. we dont have the pace to play counter attack (we do but henshall was left on the bench). why waste money and sign henshall if you leave him on the bench. im sure man city be happy. he himself wasnt happy on twitter after the game vs chesterfield. he scores a goal 5 mins into his full debut with us at accrington then gets dropped for the next game. makes sense that does.

i know im being negative but i cant see anything to be positive about. under ward last season i was going to games expecting to win due to his record. now im going to games expecting to lose and hoping we steal a point.

A look at tomorrow's opponents

Bristol Rovers take a short trip across country but a long trip up the Division 2 table to take on leaders Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday.

The U’s have picked up 26 points from their 14 games this season. They have won half their games this season and have suffered just 2 defeats, the type of form that establishes a table topping team.

Since their last League defeat on 5 October, 2-0 at home to Southend, Chris Wilder’s team have won 2 and drawn 2 of their 4 games.

Last weekend they went to the top of the table after securing a 2-0 win at AFC Wimbledon. James Constable opened the scoring after only six minutes with a header from Asa Hall's cross.

Oxford secured all three points when substitute Deane Smalley right footed penalty into the right hand side of goal 8 minutes from the end of normal time.

Talking ahead of Saturday’s game Wilder said, "It is a completely unpredictable league so we just have to make sure we keep our part of the bargain and keep the hammer down.

"Everything about the performance was good and the only thing I was unhappy about was the last 10 minutes when we put undue pressure on ourselves by giving the ball away.

"We have worked hard to get top and that is why we are in that position. We are a hard-working side and we were lucky that our defenders kept up their side of the deal."

The game could be the story of two Alfie’s. With Alefe Santos starting to establish himself in the Rovers team, United have their wide man Alfie Potter back in full training and likely to be involved again.

The U’s will also have striker Dave Kitson in contention as well as Deane Smalley who is now fully fit. Kitson served a one-game suspension for the AFC Wimbledon game.

With Potter, Kitson and Smalley available and James Constable looking for his 100th goal in United’s colours it gives manager Chris Wilder plenty to think about, a luxury that John Ward could only dream about.

Although the late signing of Chris Beardsley on loan from Preston should give the Gas some much needed presence ‘up front’.

Looking at the history of games between the teams, there have been 46 meetings since Oxford first entered the League back in the mid 1960’s, replacing Accrington Stanley.

In terms of results the games between the teams have been remarkably even over the years with Rovers winning 17, United 17 and 12 draws. In all respects it’s the home teams who dominate in these fixtures with 5 United away wins and 6 Rovers away wins.

In recent years it was the Yellow’s who had dominated with 5 wins and 2 draws in 7 meetings. Then last season to throw everything into chaos, the away teams won both games 2-0!

It was Rovers who, until recently, had never scored more than 2 goals, but they had scored 2 on 7 occasions. Rovers’ worst defeat at Oxford, until the 6-1 thrashing in 2010/11 in the Coca Cola Cup, was a 4-1 loss on only their second visit to the ground on 2 February 1967.

Alfie Biggs was Rovers’ scorer, with doubles by Grahame Atkinson and Mick Morris for the U’s.

Rovers’ next visit, only 7 months later, was much more productive, a mid-week 2-0 victory with goals by Harold Jarman and an own goal by John Shuker sent the Eastville faithful home happy.

It wasn’t until September 1995 that the victory was to be repeated when the two Marcus’s, Browning and Stewart scoring past Timmy Carter in the U’s goal and Chris Allen scoring for the home team in a 2-1 win for the Gas.

Back in 1982 and 1983 Rovers played two Boxing Day games at the Manor, scored 2 goals in both and lost both, 4-2 and 3-2 respectively.

Rovers had a remarkable spell at Oxford between 1995 and 2002. They played there five times, won four and drew the other game. Amongst those victories was a 5-0 thumping, with a hat-trick from Jamie Cureton a Robbie Pethick goal and another by Nathan Ellington, on 22nd January 2000, which looked as though it had set Rovers on the path to promotion.

In last season’s game at the Kassam, Rovers took the lead on 54 minutes. The ball was played up to Ryan Brunt, who cut into the area where he was brought down by Oxford skipper Jake Wright.

Brown stepped up to send Luke McCormick the wrong way with his spot kick, but the referee had seen a player encroaching into the area and ordered the penalty to be retaken. Brown kept his nerve, and put his spot kick in the same place as the first, with McCormick again going the wrong way.

Rovers wrapped things up in stoppage time. Once again Brunt was fouled and, as the Oxford defenders switched off David Clarkson found Richards with a quick free kick. The young striker did the rest, running through on goal and beating McCormick in a one on one situation.

Talking ahead of this week-end’s trip to Oxford John Ward commented, "I don't think their league position holds any fears. We played well against Chesterfield who were high-flying at the beginning of the season.

"We know what we are going into and they'll see it as a home win but we've got to make that difficult for them. They're the best team at the moment so we've got to play well."

The U’s James Constable scored his 99th goal last Saturday with the opener in a 2-0 win at AFC Wimbledon and is hoping to reach three figures this weekend. The goal brought him within eight of Graham Atkinson’s all-time record and one behind Tony Jones in second place.

Constable, who was the subject of multiple transfer bids by the Gas last year, is focused on helping the U’s stay there and would love to round off a century of goals in front of a big crowd at the Kassam Stadium.

He said “It would be a great occasion to do it in. We will work hard and look forward to it. If I score, that would be great, but winning is the main thing.

“It’s a local derby, they will bring a few and I'm sure with the position we’re in, we’ll have a lot of fans there. It makes for another good game where everyone is going to be desperate to perform well. We need to start like we did against AFC Wimbledon and try to do it for 90 minutes.”

U’s Boss Chris Wilder said, “It’s always been a tough game with Rovers. They will bring some support and hopefully there will be a great crowd cheering us on and giving us that push and drive to stay top.”

I agree with all that you've said, CJS, although the only thing that's better under Ward is our defensive record as under McGhee we probably would concede 6 tomorrow. We need to stop playing not to lose and start being more positive, and that includes playing Henshall from the start and keeping Harrison as far away from the team as possible on current form.<laugh>

i agree however harrison offers pace and will worry the opposition. smith offers pace RW and henshall offers pace LW and harrison offers pace up front along side another striker say brunt or richards. clucas and o'toole at CM. lockyer LB packwood and parkes at CB and southway RB or even keary at a push.

------------------mildenhall------------------
southway--parkes--packwood--lockyer
smith-----o'toole-----clucas-----henshall
-----------richards----harrison-------------

thats attacking for us and smith, henshall give pace out wide, we know smith can cross a good ball and i presume henshall can still part of the man city set up at his age. pace up front too. when woodards returns he can go RB and brown returns he can go back to LB. looks good to me.

cheers, i'll pay you that fiver tomorrow ;)

I like the idea of Smith being moved further forward, it's just a shame Woodards is injured for so long. I've never seen Southway, so if he's good enough, let's give him a chance, and Shaquille Hunter.
