    Genuine question guys.
We seem to have a problem playing in Europe and delivering a half decent season....maybe down to injuries etc... but... if getting into Europe meant we have a poor season... what would you prefer?

not at the expense of the league

if the fat bastard is not willing to put his hand in his pocket to enhance the squad
why bother cutting our throats in the money league

Nah. Its not like its a novelty, we've been in Europe plenty. If you were talking CL then that would be different. But the Europa just looks to be a poisoned chalice. I doubt it will be an issue anyway this season despite us doing ok at present.

    Juxtaposition, surely.

But it depends in which competition; I'd gladly take Champions League football in exchange for finishing 16th the same season. But not the Europa League. Reason being that the income lost in league performance would be more than made up for in CL fixtures, even if we finished bottom of a group.

Yes, love European football, though the club must learn from the experiences of last season, that means the players, the coaching staff, the manager, the directors and Mike Ashley in particular.

I love us being in Europe. I wouldn't like the idea of a poor league season, but for me you always aim to qualify for Europe.

It's the best we can hope for so why turn it down?

Voted No ...but wanted a 'Maybe' button ideally ..

CL absolutely Yes ...Euro's well that is a 'definite maybe' ..IF MA used the euros as a stepping stone to competing successfully in the CL/ Top 4 spots in future ..then YES ..but that would mean investing in the squad, to the tune of 4-5-6 quality players (which I cant see happening)

The Euro's, though financially poor and a bit of a poison chalice re league form (for a small squad) does provide the opportunity to learn to play ..the twice a week squad game (and is great fun too, seeing the lads playing mid week in hot, sultry, exotic places such as Gdansk (also, those johnny foreigner's wont know who Wonga are so that's a plus on the embarrassed front)
But that all depends on having a long-term plan and ambition to 'compete' with the best ..and that is where I come unstuck and had to vote No, as MA failed to invest last time and a comfy 10th place in the PL, with free advertising for SD .. is just right for him

Yes. I don't get why so many of you guys are advocating no Europe. Clubs dream of Europe. I dream of Newcastle in Europe. I just don't get what's with the negativity in this. Yes, we did poorly in the one season we miraculously qualified for Europa, then are you gonna say either we go UCL or we don't go Europe?

At this rate, why let us might as well say let's not even go for UCL at all? Since when we get there Pardew is going to use the excuse that its a taxing league all over again.

Furthermore, without Europe, you think quality players are going to be willing to come here?

Players like Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, would rather come to play for a mid-table club with no ambition like us, than to play for Borussia Dortmund?

Why should it mean a poor season ? It shouldn't. This is all from Pardew's moaning.
Did we have poor seasons when Sir Bobby was doing it ? NO
Tell a player he has an excuse for underperforming, and they'll underperform.
Footballers are almost across the board, lazy, stupid, greedy and easily influenced

Ashley has to show ambition first by strengthening the squad whilst moving on 2 players who just dont hack it ( Gos Ober )

Its not really coming from Pards moaning though is it. not for me personally anyway. The fact he agrees is neither here nor there. look at the clubs who have been in the Europa since it was revamped, look at their league form. That is all clubs not just the oens who do well. Don't get me wrong if you invest enough you'll be ok. I'm not one for defending Ashley but if you look at the financial reward on offer from the Europa, its hardly a golden egg.

I'd have went yes if I thought we were going to equip ourselves with enough depth to make it an enjoyable experience. We won't though. Completely uncomparable with Bobby's situation where he was allowed to strengthen from a position of strength. Just take strikers alone - Shearer, Bellamy, Cort, Ameobi, Lua Lua, Bridges at one stage. And Europa now to then are 2 completely different competitions.

When does the money from the new European footy BT TV deal come into play? I remember reading that the deal was for Champions league and Europa and that to make the Europa more attractive it was going to be worth 10-20million per season for each English club involved.

I don't remember seeing this, to be honest. I thought they purely took CL. Any Europa rumour has been circulated by UEFA (such as winners going into the CL, upping the stakes, changing the format, yada yada).

The only thing that saves the Europa is binning the whole fcking thing and just having a European Cup. Think about it - the CL is already massively diluted in terms of being a real competition among "champions", so why not just throw a few more clubs in it, add a qualifying round and - hey presto - an FA Cup for Europe.

I wouldn't like to see that happen. It's a good competition with a good history. Stopping the 3rd place drop outs from the CL dropping in would help improve it. When you're out you're out.

There were certainly reports that BT agreed to pay for the Europa rights as part of the deal at the request of UEFA and that it would mean around £20million to English clubs who made it into late stages of the competition. I'll have a look around and see if can find anything on it.

I was led to believe that is happening, in line with giving a CL place to the winner (given last year, either England or Portugal would have an admin ballache, so can't really happen).
