Like Lennypops my local team is Brighton and watched them play at the awful Withdean. Was happy I didn't support a local team at that time. I still like Brighton to do well and would like to go to Amex at some point. Been spurs since 1987 and also chose Sheffield Wednesday, Leyton Orient and Maidstone as a team from each division at the time. Spurs are the only one I have any passion for and it is that I regret a little. If I didn't care I wouldn't feel miserable somedays and have my girlfriend moaning at me for liking football. But then again, I wouldn't have the moments of happiness such as against Dnipro. The Cost Benefit Analysis has been a bit weak this year though.
I used to do deliveries in and around Brighton, and remember delivering to the goldstone ground, and last year my mate was doing the park and ride to Brightons new stadium, and used to manage blagging his way in free to watch the game
The only reason to regret supporting Spurs is that it's a top flight team which brings all the problems like expensive tickets, no standing, lack of atmosphere(at times) and getting overtaken by teams that are spending 100s of millions more than the club can afford. Football-wise I'm not as concerned with, whether it's going well or poorly I'd rather be a good supporter of a bad team than a bad supporter of a good team. I'll always enjoy supporting Spurs, even when it's painful like it is at the moment. I didn't chose to support Spurs so I could brag on the internet or with friends about history or success, I just wanted to watch football and support a team and I'd like to think I'd still be supporting Spurs even if we were in League Two.
I don't mind it being painful, I'm used to that after 50+ years. What pisses me off is when it's unnecessarily painful, as it strikes me this last 6 months has been. That it's currently painful is down to gross incompetence, IMO.
"What pisses me off is when it's unnecessarily painful, as it strikes me this last 6 months has been. That it's currently painful is down to gross incompetence" Fair comment.
Reading Maggie's piece brought a lot back.Like her dad I was born in Wood Green before being whisked straight away to Tottenham.Later moving on to Cheshunt close to that wonderful Spurs training ground.Remember that beautiful ground they gave up for cash?Twits! Travelling the country....strange people talking "funny".....unable to understand the Wolverhampton accent.....returning by coach or train after a good win or bad result.....reading that strange programme and wondering why they don't say much about Spurs....bloody horrible tea or Bovril...Bovril?Yuk!!!!....odd tasting beer....north country pies......yes,certainly an eye opener. Buying a house for 1,600....and now probably costing you half a million!!!!!! I still get pleasure looking at our old white shirts with the Cockrell over the players hearts,as though,in those days, they really cared......their hearts were in the right place!
Not sure that a song about self-harm and heroin addiction is a good advertisment for supporting Spurs...
No, it's the Johnny Cash version, so it's about lost youth, failing health, impending death and losing a loved one. Much better... Maybe we should ensure that one of our away kits is always black, on behalf of our poor and downtrodden fans?
Buying a house for 1,600....and now probably costing you half a million!!!!!! We sold that house after 7 years for £5000 and bought the next one for £7000. I feel so sorry for youngsters now with the ridiculous house prices. Just like football since Sky came in and ruined it all with their silly money. For all those who get depressed supporting our famous club just think of the clubs who have had NO success in the last 100 years or so. There must be quite a few. I'll leave it to all you experts to come up with some ( I don't have the instant recall these days!)
When Spurs depress me I have often thought about the Acrington's of this world.Makes me think "maybe we are not so bad off after all!" I salute their fans, not many I suppose, but turn up week after week with not much to cheer about.......
Whilst he may have changed the line "I wear this crown of ****", the song isn't about lost youth or impending death at all - the lyrics to the first verse remain exactly the same: I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything The video is the reason people believe the song is about mortality, but that was just a happy accident: originally it was just going to be the footage of him in his home interspersed with footage from the Cash Museum, but they were given mountains of archive footage Cash's management and when trying to find a use for it they dropped a clip into the video (the shot of Cash riding the steam train at the start of the first chorus) and they were taken back by the juxtaposition and went with it for the remainder of the edit.
Never mind the late, great Johnny Cash, The Ramones, as always, have a song for Spurs fans.
