A good question and a difficult one to answer. For this i would turn to the retained list and i'm sure the last game of the season against Shrewsbury might supply some insight into PT's thought process. If you look at that retained list only one of those actually made any minutes on the pitch during the Shrews games. That being Gregory, so that's one to start us off. We haven't really had a decent winger since Barcham, apart from loan, so with the movement out of Weston, that's two. I see Carter is being released, so regardless of Martin's first team selection, i make that three. Whilst on the topic of the back four, I would probably only keep Legge, so that's another two making five, regardless of Davies' future and excluding Fish at this time. I'm not clear on the situation with Whelps, Bayo and Cody, so i will make an assumption, that we might lose one of them, although i can't quantify that, so that makes me up to six. Probably missed something in all this equation so one more, seven.
I believe that we need a young goalkeeper as an understudy to Nelson, he was ever present last year and we don't have anyone in place in case he picks up an injury or gets suspended. We have tied both McKain and Hare down so they provide added cover but would benefit loans. We need to have a faster moving CB than Barrett that is clear, however I don't see Legge as a player who could organise the back line, I would like to see someone of a similar mould to Ben Chorley when we had him. A player who is as tough as nails but quick enough to play on the carpet. We need to sign a full back on both sides to offer competition for Fish and Martin,we don't need an over reliance on the loan market as with the RB position last season. In order to keep wages down I would like to see full backs that are adept at playing anywhere along their respective flanks, I believe the fluidity could benefit if injuries become a concern. With midfield I believe we need a to sign two central midfielder, one as cover and someone with a bit of experience at this level, I wouldn't be overly surprised if we saw a return for Mousinho. Wide players to be covered by the wide players, if space on the wage bill add an out and out young winger (a la Obita). We need another striker, go for non-league high goal scorer to put pressure on Cody. That also comes to seven players (or 8 with the winger).
Maybe even be less than seven. So long as they are quality signings to complement what we already have. 1 x Keeper 1 x CB 1 x FB/WB 1 x Wide MF 1 x Central MF 1 x FW
1 New Keeper 1 New Full Back 1 new Centre Half 2 new Wingers 1 New Central Midfielder 2 New Strikers So 8 new players, may sound a lot but when you think of what we currently have and what we have released, I don't think it is out of the question. But if we sign any less then 5 players I will be both shocked and worried as right now that squad is as bare as can be, could probably field a decent league 2 mid table squad out of that but were aiming to be a whole 24 places better than that.
I think we need: 1 goalkeeper 1 right back, 1 left back or someone who can play both 2 centre backs 2 wingers 1 defensive midfielder 1 attacking midfielder 1 striker I doubt we'll bring in this amount of players but I believe we should, I'm worried about the summer a little, hopefully Taylor knows what he's doing...
All about having 2 players in every position, no need to dismantle the core of the team, just require more strength in depth!
I think we'll need at least 2 players per position,because if Hess Snr comes back and is involved in the training, we'll have injuries galore,like we did when he was here before.
