http://www.watfordfc.com/page/NewsDetail/0,,10400~2382747,00.html So, looks like Rob Kiernan has declined the offer of a new 2 year contract on 'marginally reduced terms' and has left the club. Will we miss him? Has he made a mistake not signing the contract? Personally I don't think he will be a huge loss, he has spent a lot of time out on loan but never really looked like he progressed too much. I think it may turn out to be a mistake on his part to not re-sign, not sure he will get better terms in the lower leagues. Good luck to him in the future.
Definitely good luck to him, I vaguely remember the Wycombe manager saying he really rated him, if that's the case I wouldn't be surprised to see him sign there soon.
Best of luck to him ! I too think the club and Rob may have been a little hasty, time will tell though!
My guess would be that he does have an offer from elsewhere and he knows that he will play more. I don't think we have a reserve league team anymore, so even less chance to play in competitive matches.
Good point Frenchie Not sure not playing in the reserve league is going to help the club in the long run! I always thought it was a necessary transitional link between academy and 1st team.
I have mixed feelings. A couple of years ago I thought he would step up and become a first teamer. He was progressing in the "alongside the centre half" role, of not being up for the physical stuff but quite a cultured player. Then in the last year I've seen him tried in the midfield holding role with a sweet left foot that could pick a pass, but yet he wasn't able to read the play enough (a bit like Scott Severin). When I look at our "1st choice" X1, its not bad, but there is very very little in support of this. But then I look at his loan spells, the fact is he has had 5 loan spells in the last 18 months - yet he has only started 11 league games, and that is nowhere near enough. This lack of game time - is it him or the 4 clubs he has joined? As for him joining Wycombe, he only started 2 Wycombe games from February onwards, not exactly first choice. So in answer to the question, I had hopes for him at Watford, but they were never realised.
good post Elixir, thanks for that insight ..seems a shame that the potential has been there, but nothing has come of it. So many go that way though...
Personally I think we've let decent cover slip through the net. But if we didn't see him as anything more than backup, you can't blame him for looking to build his career from a lower level. Best of luck to him.
Strange one this. If we wanted him to stay we would not have offered 'slightly reduced terms' unless we were sure that he would sign up. But there again if we wanted him to go we would have not offered any contract. I suppose without knowing what sort of deal he was on in the first place it is difficult to form an opinion - I suspect that he feels he can play regular first team football on much better money elsewhere and there were no such guarantees with us.
He seemed to get some good reviews, but having been loaned out here there and every where I'm sure he got fed up and wants to find somewhere he will get regular football. I don't blame him for leaving, you should not have to take less money to do the same thing. Best of luck to him where ever he ends up.
