But having watched hull v west ham tonight, they both looked like they had better sides than us, especially hull.. Bruce has made some admirable signings for them. There attacking options consist of: Adel Hernandez Jelavich Ince Ramirez Ben arfa Diame. Snodgrass (injured) That's some cracking options there, all at little hull. West ham also had an exciting side, Valencia looked the part and sakho looked threatening. My point is, sadly, both of these sides looked far better than us. We can't attract players at the moment, and that reason is because we refuse to spend any money. Ellis short needs to put his hands in his pockets, and give something for the 40,000+ to cheer about, and I'm sorry, but budget signings isn't going to please our supporters forever. We deserve more.
I wouldn't be too jealous of Hull's owner, he is a nutter who wants to change their club's name after all... They did look like a good side tonight in fairness, but let's just see what happens over the course of a season. We might not have made as many "big-name" signings as them, but I think Gus is more than capable of making a decent team out of the squad we currently have.
4 games in, taken points of Man U and Spurs, only defeat to the odd goal away, Big players not quite match fit, One's rodders who's scored already, one's Alvarez who gave 100% pass accuracy on his debut and the other's Giacc who's given 100% pass accuracy in his last two league games, all three to get better. Gomez already had an impact, Buckley already had an impact, Aanholt already had an impact, all will get better once settled. Must be a glass half full thing for me but I'm not worried in the slightest.
For me, I've looked at teams for the last 2-3 seasons and seen players run at defences taking them on, drawing players and beating their man. Basically wreaking havoc whereas we've looked very pedestrian at times by comparison. We seem to have lacked that kind of creativity and I've also been jealous fo teams with the sort of player like Valencia or Diame. Not any more though, in Johnson, Giach, Buckley we have those kind of players and with more to come from Rodwell and Alvarez, we should be able to mount a more potent midfield attack - at least as good, if not better than Stoke, West Ham, Hull and our neighbours up the road. KTF
Really, is that why we have international players at the club, or was the likes of Rodwell, coshed over the head, put in an akward position and photo's taken, and is being black mailed to play for the club? Or is Giacc only at the club so he can have his daily fix of cheesy chips and blue pop?
4 games in and, to use Bri's analogy, the 'glass empty' brigade have already stuck their heads above the parapet. 'Strewth..
I think we are playing within ourselves a bit I would like to see the squad used a bit more. Perhaps Gomez and giac could come in for Rodwell and Larson
I wouldn't swap Jelavic for any of our striking options - including Fletcher BTW! He's not very good at anything really in a footballing side - he's OK in a smash and grab side. Hernandez looks a player mind but that's only one game I've seen him play in. I watched the game and enjoyed the game but the second Hull goal was woeful from West Ham and the second West Ham goal was Woeful from Hull - all well and good scoring goals but if you can't do the basic defensive things right then you have to try to win 6-5 all the time which, as we all know, is impossible!! As Bri says - my glass is firmly half full - actually it's even fuller than that - I can't remember the last time we remained unbeaten at home against Spurs and Man Utd? Can anyone?? Not since we last came up to the PL. I thought Hull would struggle and I think they would have had they still been in the Europa but they got knocked out of that straight away which means they have a squad strong enough for the PL. I think we also have a squad strong enough for the PL and wwe have spaces to build in January. The future is bright for me
Sadly those in charge at the club have ****ed up big time, Roy Keane and Steve Bruce spent all the money on average players. MON came in and kicked us in the balls with some of his signings. 4 managers in as many years and 2 directors of football. Ellis has tried hard to get it right but it hasn't worked. Add to that somebody who should have had their eyes on contracts just didn't bother to renew them allowing 8 players to walk away for nothing, those under contract we could barely give away. If you are not making money from your turn over of players (we must be one of the worst clubs at doing this) then it is hard to keep pushing forward. Ellis has brought Gus in and Congerline. I think they have done okay in the transfer window. We seem to have a stronger bench and first team which is quite miraculous. We have. Still a thin squad though a couple of injuries could really hurt us. I would think 13th again which for what the club has been through is remarkable. I honestly felt if we could get through last season and this season we can then push on as we will have put back in place a proper balanced squad. I think we are on track. We still have players to clear out from a shocking 3-4 years business.
Very much a game of two halves, both teams were utterly catastrophically dire in the first half Second half was different Plus its one game...christ talk about worrying
Hull were so good tonight they managed to get a draw at home to West Ham . I hate threads like this. Out of them players mentioned i'd only have Diame and Hernandez in our starting 11. Lets not start comparing ourselves to other teams just yet. Start judging after about 10 games. The fact Hull played decent and only drew should be more of a worry than a positive for them.
If we'd swapped our fixtures around and had West Brom and QPR at home I reckon we'd have atleast 6 points. For me we have 3 points on the board we wouldnt have had a year ago. We'll be alright. I think the 3 of us will be in an around 10-15
I'm with Bri on this. More than optimistic now. After what's happened over the last couple of years we could easily have done a Portsmouth or Leeds. We didn't! We're still there, fighting! The futures bright, the future's red and white!
I watched that game last night, both teams have awful defences. That's the problem with a lot of teams in the league, they have a side that is built around scoring goals and when it comes to stopping them going in, they just cross their fingers and hope for the best. That's why I like Poyet, he isn't trying to make the fans go home and masturbate over their forward line, he's just building a unit. He might not have got them all in over the summer but he's done some great business for the team as a whole. Bruce went all out for attackers, on the assumption that Curtis Davies was the next Sol Campbell... low and behold he's not, he looked out of his depth last night on that pitch against a WH side managed by a tactical buffoon. Valencia's goal was socks and duds though, right out of the top drawer.
All of this. Adel Hernandez - Unproven, great talent though, would take Jelavic - Always been a patchy player, wouldn't swap for Wickham Ince - Absolute toss for Palace Ramirez - Immensely talented, doesn't suit the league. AJ, Buckley much better bets Ben Arfa - Top 3 in league talent wise, headcase, hasn't performed for 2 seasons. Diame - Cattermole. Simple. Snodgrass - ALvarez, AJ, Buckley, Mavrias developing... Where they are potentially better is CB with a Davies/Dawson combo looking potentially very good. We've had no easy games so far, we've had 2 at home against top clubs, and despite having not kicked we already have 3 points more than the coresponding fixtures last season. We're also building on solid foundations, are Hull, for sale, or West Ham, a club about to move from it's heartland?
I dont see it myself, there might be one or two players from their squads i would take, but I am certain they'd be happy if they got a few of ours as well. We look like a side that is still gelling, and certain players still getting up to speed. Once we do and all players are firing on all cylinders, we will have a cracking team. I dont expect a top 10 finish this season yet - avoiding relegation fight will do me - but Poyet is building a squad that will fit his long term vision and philosophy and that suits me just fine.
I didn't see the Hull match, but looking on the Hull board they're really not happy with the defence and midfield performance last night.
