Sunderland have made an official approach to Barcelona to sign their Croatian international midfielder Alen Halilovic in January.

Halilovic, 18, only joined Barca in the summer from Dinamo Zagreb, but has become frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities.

And now Spanish newspaper El Mundo Deportivo says a January exit is now on the cards, with Sunderland making an approach to bring him in.

The Black Cats would like a permanent deal but would be happy to loan Halilovic until the end of the season, in order to give him crucial match time.

A clever and agile left-footed play-maker who can play on the wing, Halilovic already has six caps for Croatia and is often compared to Messi.

What would be funny is if he went to Newcastle was classed as a world beater after 2 games and then reverted to type like JC

From what I've heard about the lad he'd be an immense signing.

Watched him play against England in the u21 play off last night, looks and plays like Modric, infact he replaced Modric after 60 mins in Croatia's game against Azerbaijan the night before.
