He says a nice thank you and regrets Watford don't get a fee for him. "It's a shame Watford have no transfer fee for me, but they've had two-and-a-half years of me giving what I think was everything in every game I played, and I didn't cost much from Inverness - so I hope that adds up to some sort of value over that time. Hopefully the fans will understand that, as I'd like to come back on good terms this season." "I've had a fantastic time at Watford - no question about that," said the 28-year-old. "I'll look back on my time there with great fondness. "It's such a family and community feeling at Watford. Not just the staff and the players, everyone makes you feel welcome including the fans who might not see it themselves, but are a lot more forgiving and understanding than some of the fans other lads in the game tell me about.
Just sounds like a plea to forgive him because he wanted more money elsewhere, and doesn't want to be booed when he comes back! I guess if he was that bothered, he would have signed a contract when it was offered!
I'd agree with you about not wanting to be booed Kev. In all honesty, I haven't wanted to boo any of our ex-players regardless of how/why they left, managers however, are another story.
I never want to boo ex-players... but if they leave on certain bad terms, it is always going to happen, ie David Connolly and Mike Williamson
Yes we should have got money for Cowie but you can't blame him for that. I am pleased that he has made the effort to pay a tribute to the club and in particular to us fans. It shows that he respects our club and understands that many at the club will be disappointed.
Cardiff fan in peace Very true, he obviously has a deep affection for your club, if you read the artical that much comes through. Compare Cowie's attitude with Bothroyd who left us at the end of the season on a free, then started arguing with fans on twitter, disgraceful behaviour. I'm sure if all things were equal he would have stayed at Watford. I can understand Watford fans feelings after Malky left, and brought his backroom staff and Cowie with him so I hope you can receover quickly because Watford are a good club. Good Luck with the new season Hornets.
Cheers Bluebird I think we are just hoping that's all the outs now so we can work on building our own squad for the new season. Unfortuantely we have lost out main goal threat and argubaly our most creativity! I think most of us realise the season will be a bit of a struggle - But I personally think we are probably 2 or 3 signings off a comfortable, mid-table team!
Cheers Bluebird(can you ask MM to leave us alone now) Kev ,I`d be over the moon with a midtable finish in my eyes that would be a massive overachievement! Imo 4 from bottom up would be job done!
Cowie was excellent for Watford and no one can blame him if he doubles his wages at 28 years of age. Most people would move if they doubled your salary. Its just a shame we could not match thi swhen we cam down from the premiership instead of players like Ellington, Sadler etc on stupid money. Cashton and Homer need their heads testing !!! or was it all part of their plan !!!!
I love this "we should have got money for him" stuff. Contrast this with Danny Graham, he joined us aged 23 and 353 days (birthday 12 Jul), so if he'd been 12 days older we would have saved ourselves about £800k. Also if it hadn't been for the club messing about with Carlisle over the original tribunal we would have got him for a lot less (Carlisle only wanted £75k originally). Apparently Carlisle are now accusing us of messing them about again, it makes you wonder who is running the "player recruitment" side of the business!!! If only the administrators at Watford could get some things right, some of the time! (Numpties)
Who knows. Good for Cowie to make a comment like this...I know some might say its good PR but he didn't have to do this.
It was more then Mackay did, he never once said thanks to anyone, he just said i want to leave and then bigged up cardiff and their ambitions. It only takes a few second to thank the fans and the club, and it helps no end with the PR and respect of fans
This is just a short excert from Makay's interview when he took over at Cardiff although I understand he spoke for some time about Watford. I know it's not much, he didn't do an interview with the Watford press so that is why we never really saw his appreciation: In discussing his previous employers, Mackay was more than complimentary towards the Hornets, saying: "Watford was a fantastic club for me during the period I was there. I really enjoyed the people, it's a very friendly, community orientated club. "There's been a bit of turmoil over the last few years but the actual staff at the football club are really good people; there are some great people there who have been through a lot." That's just to balance up those that think he said nothing.
Words, words, words...it's actions that count. Cowie was a more than useful player but to me he's history now. He decided to go for whatever reason and we move on. I won't personally be booing him when he returns (it always feels a bit childish tbh) and I suspect attention might be more focused on MM that day!
Unless Malky gets sacked as quickly as Rodgers, regretfully I think Cowie will be booed. Cardiff are playing on Boxing Day, which is traditionally quite a noisy day. He unquestionably left because of Mackay and will be an on-pitch focal point for frustration. I am however confident that it will only happen the once. He was very open about the fact that he felt undervalued financially, and Malky was very open about the fact that he felt Cowie was our most underappreciated player. Over time people will realise just how lucky we were to have him. Talk is cheap, and at the end of the day he left for the manager and the money. But I nonetheless believe every word Cowie said in that statement, and genuinely wish him the best.
If Cowie gets booed on Boxing Day, it won't be heard above the boos that Malky gets. I do think it'd be a shame. Now that the shock of losing him has died down, nobody can blame him for going for more money, nor, truth be told, for going for the Manager, who he is comfortable working for. He also knows SD well, so maybe that's something we need to take into consideration. Perhaps he couldn't see himself playing under him. Obviously he was aware he'd be going for nothing, that's the huge shame of it, but again, not his fault. Good of him to speak, and yes, Malky did a teensy bit, but not enough, and nowhere near publically enough. Don was a bit more of a gent than that. I wouldn't consider booing him on Boxing day, and i too wish him luck.
I wouldnt boo cowie , he gave good service to the club ! Good player hope his career choice pans out!, that said I hope murray runs rings round him!
