Newcastle United terrified of playing in front of home fans as foreign stars warn loved ones to stay away
The news only confirms fears that some Newcastle players would rather go into hiding than fight against Premier League relegation, writes Matt Law

Newcastle United players have become so scared of St James’ Park that they have told their families to stay away.

An alarming run of eight successive defeats have seen Newcastle drop into Premier League relegation danger, with three games left to play.

Two of those matches are at St James’ Park, against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and West Ham United on the final day of the season.

It is understood, however, that a number of players have become terrified of playing in front of the Newcastle home fans and that some of the foreign contingent have advised their wives, girlfriends and families to stay at home.

The news only confirms fears that some Newcastle players would rather go into hiding than fight against relegation and it remains to be seen whether families are now encouraged to show their support for the final two home games.

Newcastle fans have understandably become fed up with the performances of the players and there have been protests and boycotts of games over the past month.

How Carver might fare if he worked in a convenience store

Head coach John Carver was involved in an altercation with supporters during the 3-2 home defeat to Swansea City and players have suffered verbal abuse and booing.

Newcastle have only won one game at home this year, against Aston Villa on Feb 28, but desperately need to improve that run over the final three weeks of the season.

It was confirmed on Monday that Carver will remain in charge after Derby County manager Steve McClaren made it clear he did not want to take over.

Newcastle sounded McClaren out on Sunday over the prospect of answering an SOS call, but the former England manager did not feel the timing would be right and was waiting to hold talks over his Derby future. It now seems he will stay at the iPro Stadium.

Carver held talks with Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley on Sunday and Monday, and the 50-year-old also met with captain Fabricio Coloccini.

As revealed by Telegraph Sport, Coloccini was involved in a heated bust-up with team-mate Tim Krul after the defeat to Leicester City that raised question marks over his captaincy.

Following clear-the-air talks, however, Coloccini is poised to escape being stripped of the armband for the West Brom game.

Carver has given serious consideration to replacing Coloccini as captain for the final three games of the season, but the Argentine is his only available senior defender for the West Brom clash.

That appears to have saved Coloccini for this weekend at least and Newcastle will now hope he and the other senior players accept more responsibility and show greater character over the closing weeks.

Newcastle confirmed that senior players had been spoken to in a statement that reiterated Carver will remain in charge for the West Brom, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United games.

It read: “Following the result at Leicester City on Saturday, there has been two days of frank dialogue with John Carver and senior players.

“The outcome of those discussions is that the board, John Carver, his staff and players are absolutely focused on our current situation and the three hugely-important fixtures that remain this season, two of which are at St. James’ Park.

“All parties accept responsibility for the current situation but are determined, together, to ensure this club - your cub - retains its Premier League status. That is the only focus at this time.”

Despite the appalling run of results, there remains backing for Carver at board level and an acceptance that mistakes have been made over recruitment that has left the club with too many players lacking character.

The board are also aware that accusations Carver has not properly prepared his squad for games are unfair. Newcastle players were shown a video of Leicester’s fast start against Swansea City on at least two occasions before their trip to the King Power Stadium, but still conceded a goal after just 38 seconds.

Newcastle captain Fabricio Coloccini in bust-up with Tim Krul on team bus after Leicester defeat

Fabricio Coloccini could be stripped of the Newcastle United captaincy for the final three games of the season after being involved in a bust-up with goalkeeper Tim Krul following the humiliating defeat by Leicester City.

John Carver has vowed to carry on as Newcastle head coach and is due to report for work as normal this morning following a series of meetings on Sunday, when it is understood that Steve McClaren was sounded out over taking charge immediately.

Coloccini demands side 'wake up' after Leicester mauling

While he is still in charge, Carver must try to arrest a run of eight consecutive defeats and one of his first tasks will be to decide whether or not Coloccini keeps the armband.

It is understood that Coloccini and Krul were involved in a heated row on the bus that took Newcastle from Leicester City’s King Power Stadium to the airport for their flight back to the North East.

Krul was furious with the defending and lack of leadership from Coloccini, who was described as an “absolute disgrace” by the former Manchester United and Everton defender Phil Neville on Match of the Day.

There is a feeling within the Newcastle staff that the team would benefit from a change of captaincy for the last three games – against West Bromwich Albion, Queens Park Rangers and West Ham United – in which they desperately need to secure at least one victory. Should Coloccini be stripped of the captaincy, then the midfielder Jack Colback would be among the favourites to take over as captain along with Krul.

Carver was not involved in the bust‑up between Coloccini and Krul on the bus and decided to keep his thoughts to himself until he addresses the players again on Monday.

Newcastle are two points above the relegation zone following their latest embarrassing defeat, but Carver will not quit and has received sympathy from board members over the performances and attitude of his some of his players.

Carver has had a series of angry clashes with first-team players in recent weeks and is seething about the lack of effort in games from certain troublesome individuals. But performances have not improved and there is a real danger that Newcastle could tumble out of the top flight.

A furious Carver even accused the centre-back Mike Williamson of deliberately getting sent off against Leicester, a charge that could easily have been thrown at Daryl Janmaat, who was also dismissed needlessly late in the game.

Williamson released a statement in which he denied he had deliberately got himself sent off. He also apologised to the club’s supporters and his team-mates, but not Carver. “I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to the Newcastle United supporters and my fellow team-mates for getting sent off during yesterday’s game,” Williamson said.

“There was absolutely no intent to hurt Jamie [Vardy] or get sent off, but I recognise that I should have been more composed and measured in my determination to win the ball. Unfortunately, it did the one thing that I never wanted to do, and that was to hurt the team. Moving forward, I will do whatever I can to help my team-mates prepare for the next two games and fight to get back into the team when I’m next available.”

Williamson is lying when he says that he had no intent to hurt Jamie Vardy, initially he slid for the ball but mid way through the slide he swings a kick at Vardy. If he's unaware that kicking people in the shins can cause pain then he's more stupid than he looks.

That Williamson ban could help them out massively, the guy is a joke from what I've seen of him. Not sure if they rate him but he's ****ing awful if you ask me, where did he come from?

As for Krul, he has fallen so far from grace since his world cup heroics he must be suicidal. He can barely catch the ball, they need to drop him if they want to stand a chance of getting anything from the games they have left.

Coloccini, **** knows what's going through his head, he's carrying a flask of soup under his arm in case the bus breaks down and the team are stranded.

Newcastle United-mad priest hopes divine intervention will see Mike Ashley cast out

    A prayer for Newcastle United
    “Dear Father in Heaven

Listen to our prayer in the midst of our suffering.

To be at St James Park is where we want to be. To win is great. To see passion, excitement, endeavour and skill is ecstatic.

To lose is always terrible. It takes some time to recover. But now we are being attacked from within. We are more financially secure now, but the cost is great. No involvement in cups is allowed. Best players sold. Mediocre mid-table finish is what is demanded.

The balance sheet has become the most important thing.

But this is not what we want.

And so Heavenly Father, grant that the owner will see more to this than profit and balance sheet. That there is more to life than money. It’s about families and belonging. Being happy.

If you spend your hard-earned money on a match ticket, it’s an insult to witness passionless, mercenary football.

Our family is Newcastle. Give us what we want.

But, if he is not prepared to change Heavenly Father, give him the insight to know it’s time to go.

Give us a new owner (or a new mentality for the present owner) who will take our spirit and not crush it but revive it. Give us someone who will not rename our stadium from St James Park, not change the colour of our strip. Not rebrand us into something we are not.

We’ve had highs and lows. Notably the Fairs Cup. That was a great year. But too many lows.

    Help us now,

    Amen.”

The whole article is very good to read, from our point of view, and the video is very funny, but I'm wondering about it being from The Telegraph . . . . is it really, 'cos their illiteracy is absolutely astonishing <yikes>

I suppose you can afford to laugh now seeing as you lot are safe and out the relegation zone and it's not as if you have 3 of the best form teams in the league to play in your last 4 games is it.

Unfortunately terry dropping krul isn't an option given that the other keepers we have are twice as bad

Would you like some crisps with your bitter! FFS it's a football forum - we are talking only about an article written about Newcastle - not about us - I wonder if you'd be laughing if the situation was reversed? You'd be the first on here

You've had no leverage for years. What were you going to say? 'Ha ha! we've had two short winning runs of form in the last two years that have saved our season in between being completely ****e and a national laughing stock'? <laugh>

Yeah that would have sure shown us what with our derby day dominance and Cup final.

You won't get a bite with comments like that, just people taking the piss out of you. I know you Mags think any response is a bite but that's on planet Toon. But planet Earth is different. ;)
