I think that the whole Clarkson saga maybe the catalyst for change that the programme may have needed from a viewers point of view. I used to watch each series religiously a few years back and always treated it as a light entertainment show rather than a serious motoring show and I was happy enough with that because I would have much rather having been watching someone like Clarkson screaming around in a Veron than some other old duffer explaining to the masses in boring monotone that "whilst it may have won Family MPV of the year two years in a row, the reality was the Citroen C4 Grand Picasso, was a cheaply made, tacky interiored pile of French poo, that would bring heatache to 40 something year old family men who were stupid enough to buy one following the car industry awards hype - instead of popping down to their local Honda dealership and snapping up a 3yr old CRV 2.0L Petrol." However, like other mainstream programme which have been around for years and years such as Grand Designs, Escape To The Country, Location Location Location, Top Gear has become too formulaic. You can tune in at any point and probably guess how far in to the 60mins you had tuned in at, what would happen segment would come on next and it all got very samey. People don't like change and they also are prejudiced to certain things or people and refuse to give change a chance "That's me finished with Top Gear" or "Cant stand that ginger motor mouth so I wont be watching" - but the thing is, I think Evans is a lot smarter than people give him credit for and he can read the public, he can look at an institution such as The Radio 2 Drive Time Show, or Breakfast With Wogan and realize that he has to be very careful with it, but will over a period of time not only retain listening or viewing figures but actual make a show more successful. Before he came back to radio in 2010 on Radio 2 he claims he was on a fishing holiday in Ireland and tuned in to the Gerry Ryan radio show on RTE Radio. He saw how simple it was to actually engage and use the public to make a successful show and the combination of a good anchor, fast paced elements and plenty of public interaction you have a hit. He brought that to Radio 2 - it's not important whether the ginger haters hate him, his listening figures and awards show he knows how to run a good show. I think that despite people presuming he will ruin the show and it is the "death of Top Gear" I reckon he may just take it to another place, no, it wont be Clarkson with May and Hammond, it will be different, but I reckon there is a strong chance that in a couple of years, the public as a whole will out shout the ginger haters and accept he has done a great job. Love him or hate him, he has been around the block, has a good business head on him and knows how to produce entertainment. Time will tell.
