Saw this article on the ESPN site: http://www.espnfc.co.uk/club/watford/395/blog/post/2529025/capoue-and-co-show-watford-mean-business What do you think?
I think the squad that is being assembled is more in keeping with qualifying for Europe or winning a trophy (League Cup, anyone?) than it does merely trying to finish 17th.
What do we know? 1. Watford finished second in the championship in 2014-15. 2. The Premiership will be a lot more difficult than the Championship 3. Lazy journalism has linked us with just about every footballer in Italy for a move to Watford. 4. The management have brought in a raft of new players, of a standard we could never have dreamed of a few years ago. 5. A large influx of players may take time to gel; GFZ found that out as a result of various factors. 6. Lazy journalists and bookmakers see us as a sure thing for relegation, I'm certain if they took off their blinkers and looked properly we would move to being a team with a possibility relegation, just like most of the other clubs in this division.
Interesting article, is there just a hint of irony there or is it writen out of a genuine interest? The signings, I have to agree with Fez, while not fitting the expected Pozzo pattern, are certainly not designed to keep us in the Premiership they appear to be aimed at step three of the plan - step one was promotion, two stay-up and three top half finish. There does outwardly appear to be step away from the Pozzo's usual transfer policy, but they are heading into the unknown (again) and to have experienced and capable hands for the task will help. While lacking in Premiership experience the players signed are no slouches and international caps and status, appearances in the Champions and Europa Leagues these players are not being signed for a relegation scrap, we are looking as the first step to something bigger. If we had been taking players from QPR, Hull City, lower half Premiership or Championship clubs I would have predicted a relegation fight, which we may still get dragged into, but our purchases indicate our owners have their sights set higher.
I do not recall any other newly promoted team bringing in so many new players all at once. It is usually a case of "give the lads who got us up a chance". Which often does not work. Obviously the risk with having so many new players is that they will take time to gel. The manager needs to find his best formation , and the players need to gain confidence in each other. In the meantime most of the other Premiership teams will have more settled squads (who were good enough to survive last season) plus a few improvements. So I would expect a difficult start, (first 6 or 7 games) and the fixture list over Christmas/New Year is harsh. Survival may well depend on how we perform after January.
I believe Bournemouth have signed almost as many players as Watford, but the quality on paper looks poor compared to those joining us. Most of the players coming to Herts are not really known to us, so it is difficult say they are average to very good. Looking at the ages of them the Pozzos have certainly gone for experience rather than hoping to make a quick profit. Burnley tried the give the lads a chance approach , yet despite some great efforts they were not good enough. I think that the real money will come if the Horns can survive for a second season in the PL and that is what the sights are set on.
To survive we will need to win at least 10 games over the season. There are 6 teams we will not beat home or away, which leaves 13 teams from which we need 10 to beat once, plus get say 7 or 8 draws. So--where will the 10 wins come from?
so we need 10 wins lets do the double over, man city Chelsea west ham spurs and arsenal and as they say "then the rest was history" LOL
A journalist who seems to understand. http://www.thenational.ae/sport/foo...ford-have-enough-quality-to-avoid-relegation?
THIS TYPE OF PRESS REPORT MUST STOP The deal is we lose at Everton and draw with WBA then the bookies put our odds to 2/1 to stay up then we all pile in and our profit pays for next season ticket or is this all a dream ?
All the best for the season lads, hope you have a very good season, look forward to playing you boys once again, you were always one of my favourite fixtures at the Liberty Stadium............
Bloody hell! As you say NZ, the first one to get it and a pretty sensible forecast of 16th. We're not saying we definitely will survive, but most of us who follow it closely and understand what's going on at the club know that the complete write-off that most are predicting (Danny Murphy on TalkSport this morning and the bookies included) just aren't looking closely enough.
Apparently Danny Murphy said we will struggle....because all our loans have gone back! And I don't think he meant AG/Connolly.
There's nothing like a well informed pundit. And Danny Murphy is nothing like a well informed pundit. Who do you blame though? The ill informed pundits who spout this bollocks or the various media outlets who employ them?
