Right I have been enjoying reading the owld codgers reminiscing about the owld days.
Especially about Shack, so I was browsing the interweb about him and came across these videos.

    Enjoy!
First ones the Entertainers from BBC>
Second is better quality German match with his delightful skills and superb 3rd goal.
Where he had learnt his lesson from over running the ball for an earlier attempt. <ok>

A historical point there is that Shack was the last Sunderland scorer for England.
And Sunderland played in bright orange shirts.

    Tiz true.
But Shack was the last SAFC player to score for England who thought Sunderland was a big club. :p

Just read this comment elsewhere from Stanley Matthews about Shacks first effort that he over ran.
This coming from a guy that was no slouch himself. :)

""He came over to the right and I slipped the ball to him and ran on for the expected through pass. It never came. Instead he swivelled and ran right through the German defence. He even beat the goalkeeper but, unluckily, the ball ran out of play. If he had scored, it would have been the greatest goal of all time. The rest of us could only stand and marvel at the cheek of him."

Has Adam Johnson not played for England whilst at Sunderland? He scored a few for England.

No - regardless of, prior to the England squad announcement before the League cup final last year, him being in the best form of his entire career - he didn;t get picked! Andros Townsend got in ahead of him after scoring 1 in 14 - johnson had 9 in 12 and around 5 assists!

    Really? <yikes>

I know he had a purple patch but I didn't realise it was to that extent.

I thought he'd been picked a couple of times at the start of his time with you lot. I think it's safe to say he won't be getting another crack at it now, unless he signs for Liverpool.

That was a weird time - 26th November, 1956. I was there, and, in fact, have the match programme in front of me now. It was a good game, and we got to see Nandor Hidegkuti, the centre forward who scored a hat-trick against England in Hungary's historic 6-3 win at Wembley (1953). Three more of the Red Banner team were substitutes for Hungary that day - Palotas, Sandor, and I. Kovacs. So this was a team worth seeing. But as it turned out, it was so much more than a football match.

It should have been a return fixture, because Sunderland were due to play them in Budapest on 7th. of November. But the previous month, the Hungarian uprising broke out. On November 3rd. Soviet armoured divisions surrounded Budapest and closed Hungary's borders. We couldn't go. And Red Banner - the Hungarian army team - were rather keen to get out quickly. Ferenc Puskas, a major in the army who played for Honved, was already on the run. His whereabouts were unknown for around six weeks, and several times the British press reported him dead. But Puskas turned up in northern Italy, went into hiding and to look for a new club. There was no shortage of massive clubs who wanted him, of course. His problem was where would he be safe from the KGB? There was one place which was particularly difficult for communists to operate - General Franco's fascist Spain. And that's how Puskas came to sign for Real Madrid. So here we were, welcoming a team of guys who were none too sure of their own security, and were doubtful whether they could ever go back. Manager, Bill Murray, ended his programme notes with

"I am sure everyone will join me in wishing the Red Banner party a pleasant and successful tour in Britain and may conditions soon permit them to return and rejoin their families in their beloved Budapest."

There are times when football doesn't look as important as we feel it is. And that was one of them.

Yeah I know - even he said it was the best form he'd been in for his entire career - yet when he was on the bench at city he got picked for England all the time!

Same with Milner, although I think that lad is a good player. I think he'll do well for Liverpool, not sure how they're going to squeeze 12 AM's into their midfield but I'm sure Brenda has a way.
