Chancel Mbemba will have to carry him for the next 2 seasons it seems.

His legs have obviously gone and shows no signs of reading the game at all, as he shown when Mane skipped past him.

    Big centre half needed fast.

Bit too early to judge how he'll get on alongside Mbembe for me. We know he has issues with pace, but that was his first game time at all since last season. Much happier seeing him in the team than Saylor or Willo. Hopefully they will improve as a partnership as they get to know each other better - assuming no-one is coming in.

Let's not forget he hasn't had a pre-season. In an ideal world we'd sign a towering CB and a good LB and sort out defensive problems, but I can't see it happening. In any case, Colo is a good option to have and evidently a key influence around the place.

You saying his lack of pre season is the reason he pulled out of challenges?

Have to take issue as there is no way last season's defence would have crumbled today. You have to be there before you can crumble. And last season's defence were never there, so they could hardly have crumbled.

    None so blind...

Same old mistakes today and getting bailed out by a 20 yr old. It was Willo and Saylors fault though.

Now its pre season? Is there any straw you wouldn't clutch for Colo BRS? Nothing changed from last season, same errors and nothing to do with fitness. I agree he was the best of a bad bunch to keep as back up. However it doesn't change him being garbage today or the few seasons and it being nothing to do with others. We have to replace him pronto or we will be wasting a very promising midfield. Him and Haidara are a shambles.

Let's see after ten games. You will see the Colo quality of old.

Things could be worse mind - we could have brought in someone **** on loan - Caulker for example.

You have unwavering faith in a man who has probably only had one good season which was so long ago its a distant memory. Strange one by Saints, obviously Koeman is thinking he can get his performance levels back to his starting out at Spurs. Very risky. They look weak at the back.

We just need to go and sign the glaring need of a centre back and left back. ****ing Carr wants shot for Haidara but I suppose when you have a budget of 2m...

The defending today was comical again. Janmaat should have done better but you can't give professional footballers that long to put crosses in. Thats where I have a smidge of sympathy with Colo. Having Haidara to your left is not easy. However Colo had a shocker. He got dragged round and out of position like a schoolboy. Mane breezed past him on several occasions and he just seems to disappear when there is defending to be done. There is a role for him as 3rd choice. I have feeling though after seeing Obertan start ahead of Aarons that Schteve may have his own ideas and will possibly either not buying a centre back, or drop/move Mbemba. Which would be an error.

He was good today, him and Colback were well in control of midfield. Their ability to manipulate the ball and play in tight spaces was excellent.

I would give Tiote a few games to get match fit before discounting him. He has Ben class in the past and if he can stay fit and under a 'footballing' manager he may come good again. He just has to understand that his job is tackle and short pass and not Messi style dribbling.

missed the game as I was flying back home off hols ..but looks like the defence as normal was ****e ...when will this club focus on defence ... same old same old ... given colo a new contract . was laughable and as a captain even better .. pathetic .

should of got rid of this high earner and brought in new decent defender..

Not been said as its not cool to call the new manager, but that was a massive clanger by McClaren. Blatantly unfit. Why not just drop Gini deeper? Bring on Aarons or Perez wide and Sissoko into 10 or SDJ on at 10 and leave Sissoko. Serious error of judgement.

I think it's pretty clear we are not getting another CB. Not a first team one anyway. You don't confirm Colo as captain and give him another 2 years on his contract if you are bringing another player in to take his place in the team. It'll be Colo and Mbemba for the next 2 years at least I reckon. I think we will run down Williamson and Taylor's contracts this year and buy between 0 and 1 CBs next season. The regime's thinking is always to give a young player the chance to come good and save them some dough, so they will be looking to Dummett, Lascelles and Satka to replace Williamson and Taylor in 12 months time.

I wish we'd invest in a quality LB though. Other than Ashley Cole a couple of months ago (which would never happen) I can't remember any LBs being linked with us this summer.

I would give him a chance. He should just not have been anywhere a football pitch in that condition. He should be playing behind closed doors or 21 games ASAP to get him up to speed. He has to learn to go back to basics. The worst thing about Pardew was Tiote. That interview about developing his game was the worst thing he did. Tiote started believing his own hype. When he just destroys and release he is very competent and useful
