Wonderful performance and result considering the lack of strikers and the injuries we suffered during the match. We lack quality in some positions but there seems to be a great team-spirit. Luzon is hilarious. Almost worth the admission price himself.
Told you lot we don't need to panic the moment an ex premier team pulls into town. We dominated a lot of that, though can't say their goal was against the run of play. Famtastic feeling after the winner, and Mak grew into the game after his goal. Now out celebrating in Greenwich.
Buzzing. Absolutely buzzing. We definitely deserved to win today. Hull did have some chances but so did we and we took the two that mattered. Given the players we're missing this is a superb win. Man of the match is Makienok. One or two dodgy touches but everything else was brilliantly done. His goal was perfect, the quintessential example of what players like him should do. He laid a long ball off into the path of Gudmundsson, made his way into the box and met a delightfully floated cross with a header into the far corner. You could see what it meant to him. His role in the winner was equally accomplished, knocking down a long ball for Gudmundsson, who stooped to conquer. The celebrations will live with me for a long time. Kashi also deserves a lot of praise; he tidies up the midfield very well and passes securely for the most part. Ba was doing good things too before coming off, though I was less impressed with Bergdich who is rather ungainly with the ball, whilst Cousins made the kind of mistakes that can't be explained simply by being out of position. Charles-Cook has a lot of developing to do. Pope will be very disappointed with the goal but was OK otherwise. Having Bauer and Diarra in front of him clearly makes a big difference in terms of his confidence. Both were excellent, as we've come to expect, Bauer playing on despite a dislocated finger. Gudmundsson showed his value by being the matchwinner despite not contributing much else, particularly in the second half. Ahearne-Grant proved a good outlet and doesn't lack confidence, although his composure in front of goal needs some work. I really think this could be a big season for him. Hull weren't much cop until Hernandez came on. Huddlestone especially was anonymous, testament to the tenacity of our midfield. Nevertheless, beating them without Watt, Igor, Solly and Henderson is a big achievement. The crowd was completely supportive and sang long after the final whistle. A fantastic afternoon's work.
It was a really gutsy display from the lads in stifling heat. I was really pleased for the latest scapegoat Big Mak, excellent cross from Gudmundsson. Everybody put in a shift and we picked up another injury with Ceballos having to go off. Pleased for Gudmundsson who missed a one on one with the goalkeeper, to pop in the winner in the 98th minute. The only downside is we are running out of players and we have got a game on Tuesday.
big mak was superb! without him the game wouldve been more even and we'd have likely lost. harriott again, was always out of position. when you wanted him to take on the man, he passed, when you wanted a pass, he'd dribble into 3 of them.
Great team spirit got us this win. We outplayed Hull for must of the game and thoroughly deserved this win. Pope was a spectator for the first hour. Everyone was especially pleased for Big Mak, I bet even Vol was, I'm sure he didn't mind losing his bet on Hull to win. Diarra was my MOM though, and I won't be criticizing anyone. I liked Luzon ordering KAG to get up when he was rolling around, my opinion of him continues to grow. When Hull got their goal it seemed the force was with them, which made this an exhilerating win.
hull fans think we're the worst team they've lost to in years! surprising really as if they got a point today they'd have had 7 years good luck in one game!
Good game; absolute buzzing... Bumped into my ex. Now I need to stand in the shower, so people cannot tell if I'm crying or not.
I'm with you Forest. Diarra has slotted in at CB so effortlessly and looks like a proper genuine CB rather than a CM playing at CB. For me this is testament to the undoubted quality he still possesses at the ripe old age of 34. It reminds me a bit (on a lesser scale obviously) of one of my favourite players of all time... Marcel Desailly. A true Colossus for Milan as a defensive midfielder and immense for France as a CB/Sweeper. His ability, versatility and understanding of the game meant that he made both roles look like his speciality. Anyway I digress, back to Diarra... we shouldn't really be too surprised by what he's doing in a Charlton shirt. This is afterall a fella who has been capped 44 times in what was arguably France's golden generation. He's played in a World Cup final, and for a time he was considered as the natural replacemen/understudy for the likes of Patrick Vieira or Claude Makelele. Add a stint playing for the mighty Charlton to his already impressive CV and you can't fail to be impressed
34 is no great age for a CB. Terry is also 34 and playing at a higher level. And his game depends more on physicality than Diarra's. But if we agree that Diarra, a former world-class player, still has a bit left in the tank, the mystery becomes "What the hell is he doing at lil' ol' Charlton?". In all the debate about the merits and demerits of the Beastly Belgian's signings, the acquisition of Diarra has been largely ignored, but may turn out to have been significant.
Well done to Luzon, because we won yesterday down to good team spirit. Many teams would have settled for the draw after the Tigers late equaliser. Despite the good start, I still feel that a promotion challenge is unlikely without significant squad bolstering. Aherne Grant, Charles Cook and Harriott all proved again yesterday that they are not ready for this level (I doubt CH ever will be). Positives to be taken out of the game included a more assertive performance from JBG - we need to see him get on the ball more often, and an excellent midfield display from the Algerian lad Karshi. The only disappointment on the day as the attendance. What was 14,800 all about ? Anyone would think 5000 Charlton fans only went to the QPR to take a token seasonal selfie.
Loved reading Franco's live commentary The emotions of football summed up in two back to back posts there.
Mate it was pandemonium in my house. My boys and I were going mental and our former Millwall season ticket holding wife/mother was just looking on disapprovingly...
Was this anyone's reaction to the Hull fans after our 98th minute winner, when they thought they got an unjust point out of the match: Immature, or just me?
Agreed B... 34 isn't exactly over the hill for a CB. However, the key difference between Diarra and Terry is that the latter is performing the very same role now that he has performed his entire career. Whereas Diarra has very recently made the switch to CB from CM. Making such a move successfully isn't that common particularly for someone in the twilight of their career.
