City at home to Bolton, mid eighties. A bunch of Bolton hoolies piled into Kempton for a scrap. The following week we were at York, and the Bolton hoolies showed up again! Exciting stuff for a then teenager!
hillsborough- 4-2 emirates , wembley etc are all obviously up there... also enjoyed yeovil away for our 1st promotion, mainly as we somehow made it back to hull in about 2 hours, in town for celebrations and i pulled a right corker in waterfront..
Favourite matches seem to fade with time and get replaced by more recent games. Casting my mind back, beating Chelsea 3-0 when Kerry Dixon was a star man, same season beating Leeds 3-1 and Man City 3-1. The Liverpool FA Cup 2-3 defeat felt special however faded into insignificance behind the Wembley win, in turn the Arsenal 1-2 away wins was truely special. So following this pattern my favorite match the recent 3-2 Win at Bramhall lane, 2-0 up, pulled back to 2-2 and as is common following City, it was feeling like a loss was on the cards when Stewart set off like a hare and with the help if JB won it in the most unlucky stadium we have the displeasure of attending. That kind of sums up why we all continue to follow our team. UTT
Arsenal 1-2 City I went with my mate a Gunners fan and had to sit in their end.. what was special was that I was behind the goal Geovanni & Cousin scored in.. I'll tell you what I saw that shot of Geovanni, coming right at me like a rocket.. it would probably have hit me if the net hadn't been there.. won't forget that til the day I die.. Other things that made it special were the great weekend we had in London (we both flew over from Lyon) and seeing the dreamlike state on the faces of City fans leaving the ground after the game - nobody could come to terms with it.. it was like hang on Wembley & now this!
Okay, finally made it over... A random selection of matches I always look fondly back on... 1988/89, 3-2 defeat to Liverpool in the FA Cup 5th round. It was my first season watching City and the Arsenal Legaue Cup game aside, most were in front of 5-6,000 crowds. The Liverpool game has 20,058 and an incredible atmosphere - even better when Keith Edwards put us 2-1 up. As a young lad I started near the top of Kempton and ended up near the bottom celebrating that goal Yeovil was a great day out. Full of anticipation beforehand. Then when Lockwood brought Danny Alsopp down to win Greeny's penalty and not to mention Ashbee's cracking winner, made it a fantastic day out. In the stand afterwards, waiting for Yeovil to finish their end of season awards so we could get on with celebrating and watching Adam Pearson despirately try to get along the stand to get near the City fans The 1-0 win over Leeds. Not only did we beat them, but we comprehensivly outplayed them that day, culminating in the Beasts goal And of course Wembley will live long in many of our memories
Probably Fulham at home , first match in the Prem. so glad my dad got to see them play in the top flight after 65yrs of supporting City (awesome) A match that sticks in my mind for some bizzare reason was a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham in the FA Cup fifth round in the 1980's. It was 0-0 with ten minutes to go and they brought on a sub (forget his name) and he scored both goals (Gutted). I think it stands out for me as it was the first time i had been to an away match and i couldn't get over the atmosphere it was immense.
Bradford 2 city 3 with us scoring in the last minute to end a crap run when we hadn't won for about 14 games.....it was also my first away game so sticks in my mind.
KC Stadium - The 5-0 game against Southampton (the day I thought promotion was on the cards) Boothferry Park - Too long ago to remember the score line, York City at home, I can remember being in the South Stand and Theo Whitmore scored a cracking freekick ( I could be wrong) I've slept alot since then, I think it was a Tuesday night game. Come to think of it, it might have been a dream. Away - Emirates or the week after when we beat Spurs.
The two obvious one's in recent years have to be for me Wembley and the 2-1 away win at West Brom, after that game you felt like anything was possible and the way we played and just the atmosphere at West Brom was brilliant. Wembley i think will stick in everyone's memory and is a pretty obvious one... Another great day was the 2-0 away win against Bradford in League one, that was a great result, performed well and got one over on Deano! Favourite away game was a 2-1 away win over Boston, it just sticks in the memory think thats when i first accepted that we was going to win promotion after many years of being stuck down there in bottom division of the football league!
I wondered if anyone else would pick this game...Ian McParland getting the winner and jumping onto the fences in front of us all....and going absolutely mental In my mind I think it was 16 games without a win and a league record sequence
1 Wembley 2 Watford at Home 3 One night in Hullsborough 4 QPR -the redemption (Elliott goals) 5 Shef United away when we lost 3-2 just the atmosphere was outstanding
I've got a few! Being the first away team to win at the Ricoh Arena was pretty decent.... Beating Oxford Utd at the KC therein starting their collapse 7-4 against Swansea at BP, think it was 7-4 I lost count! Every attack looked like either side would score! Winning away at Carlisle and humiliating Matt Glennon!!! Hullsborough....
Wembley no question - Thrill of a Lifetime Manchester United - Lost 1-0 in Cup 6th Round on disputed goal...1949 at BP. Watford play off win 4-1 ?...field invasion Luton win 4-0 when they were leading the Division....Stu Elliott scored with a cross/shot to get us going.
Hull City V stoke city in the fa cup at boothferry park...stood in the south stand with me dad ..waggy put 2 past gordon banks ...city 2-0 up ....stoke pulled one back before half time and then went on to win 3-2...still a great day when i was a nipper and my dad was alive... Stockport v Hull City in the fa cup in the early 70s...think it was a draw..but the day was brilliant Hull City v man utd in the watney cup... Hull City v millwall when we won division 3 in the mid 60s......sat on my dads knee in the west stand at BP hell theres been so many....cant say wembley because i was laid up in castle hill hospital that day...arrghhhhhh..
26/9/72 City 4-1 QPR They came to BP top of the league, unbeaten and the London press were crowing about how good they were. City turned them over big style....!
1. Sheff Wed 2-4 Tigers 2. Tigers 6-1 Tranmere (On my birthday) 3. Bradford 0-2 Tigers 4. Barnsley 1-3 Tigers 5. Sheff Utd 2-3 Tigers In order of most to least-most enjoyable. I think notable mentions to Wembley and the Emirates have to be in there but thats a given.
