One thing AN could do is start giving the the refs hell. Mbokani gets mugged in the box every single game but the perpetrators never see a card. It would be fine with me if Neil got himself sent to the stands for standing up for his player. It might bring some attention to the problem.

Quite true jarold, and it is a difficult balance to find, but after that Liverpool game, you can just imagine how psychologically devastated the players must have been, even if they didn´t show it, so to rub salt into the wounds by continuing to slate them publicly, can´t honestly be beneficial. I just fear he may lose the respect of some of the players, considering a few of them are almost as old as he is.

Maybe we should spend a bit less time worrying about selecting our starting 11 to cope with the team we're playing and just select our best team and stick with it for a while.

It's not like he's criticising them in public every week, in fact it's the first time. Maybe some of our players have had an easy ride so far and a bit of public criticism is just what they need. As for it having an adverse effect on their performance, some of them couldn't get much worse, could they?

I think we are seeing the pressure begin to tell, as a manager I'm not sure he has ever had a spell like this? At Hamilton it was very much an upward trajectory, doubtless with the odd poor result or set back but nothing major. With us it was nothing more than an isolated result in the Championship but mainly good and upwards. This season he has not only had more than one sticky spell but for the first time I think he has really had to question his own methods/tactics. He has been visibly tetchy during these last few defeats and I'm not sure he has any answer to the problems the team currently face. From his perspective it must be infuriating that the players can't cut out the mistakes or seemingly follow his instructions and that seemingly has pushed him to his interview breaking point. The only other manager who has really critisised his players in the press that stands out is Morinho this season and look how that ended! The public criticism follows unacceptable performances and not just one offs. So if there are divisions in the camp, perhaps they were already there. We as fans have always loved his honesty and his forthright style and I still do, I just hope the players are not going going to spit there goldplated dummies and knuckle down and get us out of this current malase!

    Bah!

Hear, hear General and very well said. The vast majority of the goals we've conceded have been as a result of defensive errors and until we can defend as a team better, we're going to struggle get any more points on the board.

I thought it was a bit odd after the Liverpool game when he said he was so annoyed by the way we'd let our lead slip that he didn't even celebrate Bassong's equaliser in injury time. I'm not sure why he felt the need to come out and say that, especially because it wasn't true as I clearly saw him with his arms aloft with a big smile on his face after Seb slammed that one in.

He seem really tetchy in interviews so I can't imagine what he's like in the private confines of the dressing room - don't imagine it's too fun a place to be these days.

I agree. I'd prefer him to be railing against the injustice of it all, other than the players (and then privately giving them a bollocking if that's what's needed) Mourinho or Ferguson style. It's proven.

Maybe what's needed is a complete change of tact. Get them in Monday, don't review the game, don't even talk about it and anything that has gone before. West ham is the start of our season, we have 13 games, lets go get em.
Then set up to play exactly as we did last season, we'll attack with width and pace, keep the ball a whole lot better than we have been. Press the ball hard and high and lets pressure the oppo into mistakes. If we can attack with some width and pace then it'll keep the oppo fullbacks honest and take some pressure off our own.
Let's reintroduce a little joy into our play and more importantly some conviction. I can't help but think the more defensive thoughts and processes are perhaps leading to a negative mind set or at least leaving the players uncertain how and when to attack in the frame work. I would rather they had a go to win rather than this lets try and pinch a game on the break. That tactic is the preserve of the defensively sound. We are not them, best form of defense for us is attack. All that said lets still try and be a bit more solid than against Liverpoo!
This football is not what AN wants to play and I think it shows, he needs to go down fighting his way!

    Bah!

At the risk of repeating myself canario, if we had been in the middle of say, a seven or eight game unbeaten run, and had just been thumped at home by the bottom club, then yes, criticism might easily have an immediate effect, but when, like us, you´re in the middle of a five or six match losing run, with a horrible goal difference, and with the players looking as if their confidence is totally shot, I can only see criticism making things worse. What they need first and foremost now, is lifting, and a lot of it, and then some motivating, because at the moment they seem incapable of motivating themselves.

    Ruddy
    Bennett Klose Bassong
    Pinto Tettey Howson Brady
    Naismith
    Bamford Mbokani

As we clearly can't defend why don't we just go on the offence, Pinto and Brady can push on as much as they want, 3 active player up top to chase down and occupy the opposition defence.

Dammit, if we can't defend, we might as well just go balls-out and attack from the back to the front !

    Hoolahoops
    Redmond
    Brady
    Vadis
    Tettey
    Jarvis
    Howson
    Naismith
    Bamford
    Jerome
    Mbokani

Maybe Wes is a bit small for a goalie but it seemed to work ok for Cody McDonald !

On a more serious note, here is an article on player distances covered so far, which while barely worth taking the time to read did remind me of something we saw earlier in the season which was that we were by some margin the team the covered the smallest distance in the league. And no surprise that none of our players get into this list. It would be interesting to know if it's still the case that we aren't covering as much ground as other teams.

At the time, I felt it was a good thing - working extra can lead to more soft tissue injuries, so I thought it would help our squad last the distance. However, having seen us get crushed by Bournemouth, Tottenham and (dare I say it) Villa's hard pressing games, I wonder whether one of the things we need to do is have our players up the tempo? We only see the team pressing hard for short periods of time, and one of our issues in attack ever since Hughton took over has been a failure to have all the team moving well. Just a thought

Looks like it was a bit of a mistake letting Surman go.
