The transfer window system is still relatively new in the grand scheme of things. Most managers seem to think it is a lot more inconvenient than they old way of doing things, and it is fair to say that transfer window tactics are still being honed by many clubs.

There are managers who will just go about their business as they see fit regardless of what the current trend for transfer regulations happens to be. But at its extremes, the transfer window seems to be creating two distinct schools of thought.

The first approach has been spearheaded by Sir Alex Ferguson this summer. It runs along the lines of highlighting your targets and splashing all your cash before the transfer window has even opened.

He had to wait to finalise some of the details, but even before official confirmation was received it was widely known that the likes of David De Gea and Ashley Young were on their way to Old Trafford. Most of the club's business was wrapped up by the start of July.

The downside of this approach is that there are few bargains to be had. That is not of great concern to Manchester United, but other clubs operating in this way have found themselves held to ransom by selling clubs who are quite prepared to see if a better offer comes along before the end of August.

That leads us to the other school of though, for which there can only be one figurehead. Harry Redknapp loved the thrill of the old transfer deadline day and strives to recreate this every transfer window.

Spurs' lack of activity so far this summer suggests he will continue to rely mainly on those tactics.

The idea, of course, is that if you manage to catch a club that needs to sell quickly close to the deadline then you pick up a bargain. When it works well you end up with the like of Rafael Van Der Vaart on the cheap.

When it fails you end up looking like a desperate case who is willing to sign anything and still end up with nobody, as happened to 'Arry in January.

So, how would you play the transfer window game?
