Whenever I start moaning about the state of Saints, I get a quick F***off from my Sunderland mate, who says try supporting a club that wins 3 or 4 games a season for the last twenty years. Now that is a reason to be downcast. Are we better off than 5 years ago ?

It would be, I agree, but that's just a bit of vanity. It's like needing someone to tell you that you look good, when you know you're gorgeous :emoticon-0147-emo:

I quite like nobody wanting to say we're good. I know we're good and soon we're going to win something and then they'll all bloody realise.

If it was that easy, we'd have done it by now. I don't seriously believe that the board want to lose players and staff every summer.

Until or unless we either qualify for the CL, get taken over by a billionaire willing to spend stupid money, or fall away into bottom half mediocrity (or worse), I can't really see this changing. We are constantly showing that we have good players/managers, and are good enough to challenge and beat the elite, but not good enough to bring in the ultimate prizes and riches that go a long way to preventing other sides looking even more attractive still.

Les holds on to players when we have to...spider, wanyama and mane, but in general we don,t insist on players staying if we feel they haven t bought into our plan. We take the money and buy a new player. Has worked well. What we must remember is that a blip doesn't mean disaster.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to be noticed by the media? Let them carry on thinking we're "little old Saints" - it only makes other clubs and their fans complacent when we play them. As long as we carry on improving as we have done for the past 7 years now, I'm very happy to stay under the radar.

I must be stuck in a time warp because I've seen these posts from Godders for years now as the team continues to put in better performances and achieve more each season.

But no, he's right, the club have no idea how to run itself and we should listen to this angry old coot instead. Deary me. Get out of the cult of personality.

Oh and this persecution complex is a load of nonsense too. Have we forgotten that THE CURRENT CHAMPIONS are in the process of having their leading scorer nicked from them against their will? **** happens. It's how you respond that shows how good you are.

Does anybody remember when Lawrie almost went to Man Utd and it was close to being completed, but he choose to stay. Wouldn't that be nice if that was to happen more often. Its very frustrating that they go and we don't seem able to persuade those who have their heads turned to stay.

You might say how do you know? Its possible that that has happened recently, but it seems as soon as the media says such and such are talking to so and so, it always happens - very annoying.

It does feel like there's not that many of us though - specially on Twitter. Mind you, the saintsfc hashtag is suicidal after every loss. By comparison, it's actually quite calm...

It isn't a persecution complex. The media angle with saints has moved from creators of talent to selling team on the verge of collapse. Yes, the media favours the big clubs and Leicester isn't one.

Phrases like "persecution complex" seem more designed to attack the posters who are expressing a valid view about our position within the media than to relate to it. It is getting quite tedious that people think a critical view is a negative view around here.

You are often told you're gorgeous, are you, FLT? But I don't want pats on the back, or patronising words from commentators. I would like for us to be credited when we are successful. A classic example was when we took Man City apart a few weeks back. Sky comments were almost entirely about the failings of City. Alan Shearer has used the phrase "Southampton were fantastic today", but such accolades are rare. My non-Saints friends have even commented on it.

It won't change until we are a top 6 or 8 team for about 8 seasons in a row.

Oh, let's all dry our eyes. I don't see many of us suggesting we shouldn't consider signing managers or players whose clubs don't want to part with them. I don't remember too many feeling a burning injustice when Deano was let go just as we reached the Premiership.
The core thing is the club and the guiding principle, aka The Southampton Way".
In a competitive world, the best defence we have against being picked clean is firstly to keep aiming upwards, with Champions League the next target. Secondly, we need to make sure that our contracts are long and watertight, with punitive clauses for breaking them. The long contracts recently signed bode well. I can't get too wound up about this. No point in getting shirty about how unfair it all is.

I know what you're on about St.G. It's about perception from outside. Southampton are no longer the perrenial small club, I believe we are the 25th largest in the World of something, and one of the larger ones in the Premier League. Yet the professionals, pundits and those connected with football still perceive SFC as cannon fodder who are there just to make up the numbers. That's if they manage to think of us at all. There are the occasional pats on the head from unthinking pundits, but generally the attention is well away from St Mary's. Truthfully, I can think of only one pundit [apart from Matty] who has an idea of the magnitude of what is happening at SFC, and that's Claridge. The number of times I've seen, or heard him in conversation on TMNC on Radio 5, where he makes sure everyone around the table knows where SFC are at. And he gets it pretty accurate, on the whole.

And this is why, for example, Southampton can't afford to train a manager with potential. We have to appoint someone who has class. Koeman's appointment took us past the Eddie Howe's. Now we take the next step up. So, it's someone who can command respect from everyone from the first minute. Someone with successful European experience. Someone who the outside world get slightly taken aback by. Someone with the wow factor that people on the fringes of football interest acknowledge and are aware of. Eventually, Saints will burst through this glass ceiling, if they keep making the right calls. It's just a matter of time.

So much this - just look at our progression:
    Pardew - steady the ship
Adkins - take the next step
Poch - steady the ship (in the Prem)
Koeman - take the next step (to Europa)
Now we need someone to steady us as a consistent Europa League Club.

I see where you're going with that, but I don't think the ship needs steadying. With a Board of Krueger, Rodgers and Reed, they know where they are at. They probably even know who the next manager will be. We can push from the word go, with the right appointment.
