I actually thought he performed better at LB when Olsson was out
early in the season, than he did in his more accustomed LMF.
    later on.
We need to keep this type of player, and get rid of the dross.

Probably already been mentioned but I'm not sure about CJ getting a 3 year deal with an option of a 4th year. He will be 33-34 by then.

That's not the main issue I have with it though.

He isn't good enough for the Premier League, I think most agree on that and the aim is bounce straight back up so we may have him on a 3-4 year deal playing in the premier league where he is at best bang average but we will still be shelling out his wages which I bet is a substantial amount.

I don't get the logic. Surely it would have been better to have offered him a 12 month rolling/extension or a 2 year deal at the most?

    Strange decision.

Wasn't it the exact opposite with Holty? I seem to recall he was offered one year, held out for two and never the twain? Maybe they've learned from that escapade, and overcompensated by offering Jerome a deal light years ahead? :emoticon-0112-wonde

The problem being that if rumours are to be believed there are others courting him. Inorder to get him to sign at 30 he was likely to be able to get offers elsewhere of a 3 year deal and possibly more money if it's a PL club like borough. If we do bounce straight back up, we then have options. We can either sell him, assuming someone else would meet his wage demands, keep him as a hopefully at best 3rd choice option or as seems to be our way loan him out if surplus to requirements. But if we wanted to keep him, in an era of player and agent power, it seems this was the price. Whether it was a good price for City will only be revealed by his success on the pitch this season and subsequent ones. I don't think any of us think Jerome is a bad option for the championship so, I think rather than a gamble on another player this is a solid if unspectacular piece of business.

    Bah!

It just seems bizarre to me. I think we were in the PL when Holty wanted the longer deal and we had stayed up that season. I could get that in some ways as he did score some goals in the PL and was our Talisman, more than just a player.

But a 3 year deal with an option of 4th is plain odd. If CJ scored 12 + goals in the PL I would understand, but he didn't.

No club of our stature can realistically cover that sort of loss with like for like quality. Klose if with us next season will in my opinion be our crown jewel so irreplaceable. But in having Martin, Bassong, Turner and probably Bennett we have centre halves easily good enough to walk into all but the top championship sides. I really think for the championship that that lot including klose, is an embarrassment of riches. Come the PL if we get promoted, a new CB buddy for Klose becomes priority 1!

    Bah!

Maybe the club are using their powers of foresight and are predicting three years, with an optional fourth (no doubt after a play-off final defeat!) firmly embedded in the championship, where we know Jerome can perform <whistle> <yikes> ;)

I'm glad we signed him and If his long term future is sorted then he can just concentrate on scoring goals again..
I think we paid about £2 m so he was terrific value and even if we sell him we will get more than that back surely ?.

The trouble is Martin, Bassong, Turner & Bennett aren't that different in terms of quality and I don't see any of them as PL quality CB's. I think if any of them played alongside Klose it would give us a decent Championship CB pairing, because Klose has the quality to manage the defence and steady the ship. I think in any team the CB pairing is a key, especially in any Championship promotion / PL surviving team. Assuming we're going to play 2 CB's and keep Klose, I'd happily lose 2 of the 4 and bring in either 1 CB who is better or 2 who are younger and have potential to develop. The worse scenario for me would be to lose Klose (either through transfer or injury) and to persist with Martin / Bassong as our preferred CB pairing with Martin as captain.

With Olsson proving his pedigree against the Irish, if by some miracle we can keep him and Klose we are three quarters the way to a formidible defense, Pinto being the third part. Bennett could be the last part, but I am not sure that he will still be with us. Our attacking options are the main worry if the above defensive formation can be cemented Hey, ho, what do we know..

But we are not in the PL nor are we favourites to go up from a league that is looking increasingly competitive and containing a lot of ' big ' clubs. We have to concentrate on the Championship and we have enough CB's capable of putting in a good job at that level leaving us to worry about the PL if/when we get there.

Hoping Klose won't be ready until the start of season so no one will gamble £13 mill til they see him fit again at least we get him til Xmas and if we are in a good place he might stay

I'll be the happiest bunny in the hutch if Klose stays.
The sort of player who, if truly committed, an entire team can be built around <ok>
I don't believe we've had that since Grant Holt left.

We definitely have not had that since Holty left Cromer. Unfortunately such players come along too infrequently. Klose MUST be made captain next season, we can not carry on with Martin as our skipper.

But that's the point isn't it! With our current team we're not favorites to get promoted, so we need to improve the team.

The sentence in bold is the very reason why we'll never become an established PL team without a change of attitude at the club. Have we learnt nothing form the last few years. Yes we need to concentrate on WINNING the championship (not just being in it), but we also need to be planning for a return to the PL now, not a year down the line. Putting in a good job in the championship will only ensure we remain in the league.
