Why do they refuse to pick players from the Premiership winning team!

There's an unwritten rule where as England players can only be picked from London or its northern satallites of Manchester or Liverpool.

Big Sam bottled it. Continued to play a method of football that works in Spain, Germany and other mainland Europe national teams, but has never worked for England. Ideal opportunity to play DD with the pace of Vardy and Walcott up front to create havoc with their pace after the through ball. Always thought Big Sam had balls - know better now.

His comments about Rooney are the straw for me ... it was purgatory watching our lack of ideas and guile ... may not bother watching the next one if the same team is announced ...

... pains me to say there was part of me hoping Slovakia would hold out ... because then there would have been a proper inquest into our ineptitude ... watching the far prat fist pumping like we had done something really special at the end was gag inducing ...

I thought Lallana's shirt over head celebration was even worse.

You've just scored because of a glaring mistake from the keeper despite missing massive chances earlier in the game. You've not scored a 30 yard bicycle kick to win the World Cup final mate.

.. personally I can be less hard on Lallana ... the goal did signify a personal landmark in being his first for his country ... plus he was for me the best player on the park on the day by some distance ....

I agree that he was the best Englishman but the bloke who filled in at Centre Half when Skrtel got sent off had an absolute stormer.

Extremely odd. Big Sam of anyone I thought would have the balls to mix it up. There is a couple of possibilities in play

Could have wanted to see what the existing players could do before changing it up

More worryingly, the FA/sponsors are dictating. Are Nivea picking the Liverpool players?

On an LCFC note, at least if JV and DD aren't picked, they can look on at the ****e smugly not taking any responsibility. In addition, they'll come back fit and uninjured. As sad as it is now with England, it really is just an unwelcome distraction from Leicester playing. I agree with Fosse that it was a bit disappointing that Slovakia didn't hold on

There always the hope that he set out not to loose his first game and will change it up from here on in. Not like I'm holding my breathe though.

Almost every England team has to have the big names from the big clubs to try and sell tickets. Most of these over paid ****ers ainĀ“t worth the cap... yet they still get them. SA has seen how **** kane is for England so he should be dropped & JV should take his place. Look how **** John Barns was for England yet he got over 70 caps for England. I feel sorry for the other players that played in the same position around that time. Never had a chance. Same goes for Rooney.

It would be no good putting Vardy on if the rest of the team stays the same. The ball just wouldn't be delivered quickly enough.

Rooney has become so obsessed with himself as the most senior England player that he now thinks that if things aren't going right then he is the solution. So he goes and picks the ball up from the centre half's toes (even though we are playing 2 'ball playing' centre halves who are quite capable of bringing the ball out) and he actually becomes the problem because it leaves us short further up the pitch where he should be playing. It would be okay if Rooney had Messi's skills and was capable of bringing the ball from deep and going past 2 or 3 players and creating space for others, but all he does is play an aimless pass that the centre half could have played. But in his mind he is getting on the ball and contributing to the game.

As for Eric Dier (or should that be 'Dire'?), I think I've sussed out what his role is - he has to faff around on the ball until all the opposition have got back into defensive positions then pass it backwards or sideways. Heaven forbid he should look to drive the team forwards or look to break quickly. The only midfielder in the squad who is capable of doing that is Drinkwater who always looks to play the ball forwards. Jordan Henderson, for all his faults, could probably be the best current partner for DD in midfield - he has experience of playing with Gerard, has played that role and has energy and drive.

But, for me, one of the main problems is still Rooney; too many players (and England managers) seem to be in awe of him. Team mates give him the ball even when he isn't the best option, and managers are reluctant to tell him a few home truths. You can't have one player deciding he's going to override the way the team's been set up to play and destroy the shape for his own personal gain. If he is picked to play then he needs to stick to his allotted position; otherwise he needs to make way for someone else while we still have time to prepare, because if England continue to play the way they played on Sunday they are heading for a repeat of the last World Cup.

    ... this.

Posted on several threads that whilst we continue to try and accommodate Rooney the England team will fail at tournaments ... the reality is that he has been a terrific player, a real talent when he first came on the scene ... but he has been very average at the highest level in a series of major tournaments and, indeed, for the last 5 or so years generally ... it is now generally accepted that he is no longer a first choice striking option ... so he becomes the first choice midfield player? ... completely barmy....

Lallana is arguably the only England midfield player with real creativity and skill ... he just be the first choice attacking mid pick ... alli would compliment that with his aggression, energy and eye for a goal ... but you also need someone wh can do both the defensive bit, as well as having energy and the eye for a quick pass ... of the current crop that has to be Drinkwater ... doing it week after week in the Prem.

I have come to the conclusion that England will do F**k all while Rooney picks the side.
