Furious Twitter users have claimed that the reference to humour is “clearly” related to the soldier’s face paint, with one, Grace Petrie, writing: “The blackface combined with the ‘sense of humour’ line, it all comes off as pretty racist.

“The caption is definitely bad. There’s nothing else the ‘sense of humour’ could obviously refer to."

One user said he detests “the idea of non-white people fighting for a country that sees their skin colour as something to joke about” while another, Tenney Naumer, simply asked: “Are you completely stupid?

A spokesman for the anti-racism campaign group HOPE not hate told the Telegraph: "With hindsight, it should have been obvious this photo and that caption were bound to cause problems.

"Whoever manages social media at the British Army has egg on their face and should feel rightly embarrassed."

I used to black up with cammo paint. Didn't know I was racist. Mind you it was 10 years after I left the Army....but that's another story.

The woman, who is not being named by the media to protect her child, said her son regarded Mr Naitanui as his idol and he wanted to dress up as him for Book Week. She said she was worried about "politically correct extremists" but decided to dress him up as he wanted anyway, in an AFL strip, dreadlock wig and with body paint.

"He is pastey white and if I just sent him in a wig and footy gear, no one would tell who he was.

"So I grew a set of balls and painted my boy brown. After being told by everyone not to do it, my son won the parade!"

Believe it or not it's not the colour of the face which is an issue, brown skin actually shines more in the moonlight than white skin, so black guys had to "cam up" too.

    True story.
