Only way I can see us doing any more business is if a massive opportunity arises, like a world class player becomes available to us who will improve the first team. I think that is unlikely though. I think we have a big squad of what I'd call very good players, and only the very top players who will cost mega money will improve that squad. Gareth Bale or someone like that becoming available might get us interested, I don't see him becoming available though.
Some positions in our team are not as strong as others. The left back for example is not as strong as central midfield but we genuinely have 2 good players for each position. I can't remember the designated deputy for Valencia at right back. Anyone? But like last season I think we are one of the few clubs that can genuinely field 2 competitive teams.
Mahrez rumour seems to be building. I'd rather Bale any day but the Mahrez of two seasons ago was a genuinely superb player. If he gets back to that he's a hell of a signing.
I don't believe Mahrez is any major improvement on the 4 or 5 players we have who can currently play in wide areas. Lingard, Rashford, Mata, Mkhitaryan and Martial? I'm not saying he isn't as good as those players, just that he's not significantly better than any of them. Mahrez in his whole career has had 1 good season, he was rubbish before that season, and he was fairly average last season, so I just don't really think he's worth signing.
Aye, but that's a big if, particularly if we are picking him up in the closing hours of the transfer window. I'm always sceptical of those late moves - if it's not a top quality player then you are risking them having a poor start and not really fitting in.
Only because Tony's been so good and Shaw so injured. Darmian is essentially back up at both RB and LB, but no one has nailed the LB position down yet so he's needed more on that side. If Valencia was missing then it would be Darmian RB and Blind LB at the moment. Only other backups would be Smalling or Tuanzebe, so it is a position we may need to look at in the future, depending on how Tim FM does at Palace.
I would agree we don't need Mahrez, just like we never needed Perisic, but Jose seems to want a bit more width and I would say that he's a big improvement on Lingard and Mata doesn't play there anyway. He'd go in the wide player pool with Martial, Young, Mhky, Lingard and Rashford and all of them are versatile players, two of whom could comfortably play centre forward.
