Nice twisty circuit and very different to Austria, so this is a good chance to see some more car characteristics. Throw in a Silverstone double header and we’ll have a good idea! Merc looked planted in Barcelona and has always dominated on slow curves and traction, so should be favourites easily at Budapest. That said, slightly higher altitude of Austria apparantly causes Honda some slight issues and we will see more of their improvements in Budapest and Silverstone, so this is a good chance to really see whether Red Bull are capable of getting close. This should also be one of Ferrari’s better weekends. You are constantly on the turn at Budapest and hence it’s not a power circuit at all and top speed isn’t important. I think even McLaren Honda performed okay here when Honda really were underpowered, and with Ferrari’s high downforce model this year they should perform respectably. If they don’t it really could be a horrid year for them. Interesting test for McLaren too, who have had an Achilles heel on slower corners and traction but improved on high speed last year. With Ferrari, Racing Point, Red Bull and evening the very neat and tidy Renault appearing well suited to Budapest on paper, McLaren could see a trickier weekend so if they can stick a car on Row 2 at a circuit like Budapest then we really will know they are improving their car in all areas. Hamilton to win but the fascinating battle is behind him.
From Hamiltons weakest track to one of his strongest. Engines matter little here so Red Bull might have a chance
F3 quali rained off, potentially no more running today. 40% chance of rain on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Rain that would make things interesting. Practice 2 is on in the wet. If the forecast is for rain then they might do some running but maybe not as they don't have many wets.
That Merc looks a machine doesn’t it. Is DAS making all the difference or do we think they’d still be streets ahead? Rain and maybe Bottas might not get second. Hamilton will be too good here in the wet you’d think?
Any driver in the history of F1 would get that Mercedes into the top 2, hopefully the rule change next year helps.
I hope McLaren get the Merc to work this time, I hope Honda bridge the gap, I hope Ferrari will but I won;t be holding my breath.
Looking at the Ferrari powered cars how on earth can FIA think there was even the slightest possibility that they were not cheating last year? Stinks more and more as time goes on.
