Whilst they can point to the fees of Antony and Grealish (who were from much stronger leagues compared to the Ukrainian league anyway), Gakpo went for £37m to Liverpool who is more proven and also from a stronger league. Reportedly, our second offer for Mudryk will be £55m + £10m in add-ons which, for me, is still too much. But it’s more than fair and if Shakhtar say no again, time to move on.
This. Clubs seem to be getting the idea in their heads that a players age alone determines their value. At 21, you are paying for potential, especially when going from a lesser league to the Premier league, that potential may not come to fruition.
Sounds like Arteta’s telling the board to get a move on. Really hope we don’t waste this window and bring some players in.
I was sceptical about the Felix transfer as well but if you think about it there are a lot of parallels with Odegaard. Considered a potential World beater as a teenager, had all the big Clubs chasing him.. just hasn't quite worked out at Athletico (Not surprising given Simeone's Brexit football) Could Arteta revive his career as the talent is clearly there? I would say both Mudryk and Felix are risks but taking Felix on loan - then potentially buying in the Summer is a safer bet. He also offers cover Up front while Mudryk is just a wide player. If we bring in Mudryk you have to wonder how the development of ESR and Martinelli might be effected.
IF we get either players it definitely strengthens the squad which we will need for this season and going forward if in CL. having choices up front and in midfield to start and impact from bench is something we haven’t had for a very long time: start martenelli Jesus saka bench Felix Mudryk Nketiah, Marquinhos, Nelson start Odegaard Xhaka Partey bench Viera ESR Tielemans?
Absolutely mental scattergun transfer approach. He's like a teenager on football manager with an unlimited transfer budget. Bastard. To be fair though, once jesus comes back how would he or Jesus ever have played in the same team. Mudryk and a CM are more pivotal.
Looks like it should happen. Rumours of the bid being accepted... ----------------------------------Jesus--------------------------------- ---------------------------------Nketia---------------------------------- Martinelli------------------Odegaard----------------------Saka Mudryk--------------------SmithRowe-------------Viera/Nelson --------------------Xhaka---------------------Partey---------------- --------------------Elneny---------------Lokonga------------------- Zinchenko-------Gabriel-------------Saliba------------White Tierney------------Holding---------------White-------Tomiyasu ---------------------------------Ramsdale--------------------------- ----------------------------------Turner-------------------------------- When you look at the whole squad now its clear midfield is where we really need more quality. Our subs just won't cut it should Partey or Xhaka get injured. If we could bring in another CM before the window shuts that could make a huge difference to our title ambitions.
Yeah agreed. Would be criminal if we don’t strengthen our midfield. My worry is that there haven’t been any concrete links to other midfielders so far.
This kid had better be good. This is an absurd amount of money for a player with very limited game time from the Ukrainian league. I really hope this works out…
Well, I have no ****ing clue why we are hijacking deals to sign a player who, clearly, wanted to play for Arsenal. Mudryk had been playing footsie with you guys for weeks. We have enough players at Chelsea who really dont want to be there, which is part of the reason we are doing so **** right now. Plus we have overpaid by at least £20m, baffling transfer policy by Boehly. Total scatter gun.
It certainly seemed like he was set on joining Arsenal, but I guess money talks. Offering him a 7 year contract and giving Shakhtar the money they want as a guaranteed fee seems to have done the trick. Arsenal clearly had a valuation limit and weren't willing to go above that. In fairness, the journalists did say that Arsenal would not get into a bidding war with Chelsea, so I guess I can't be overly surprised at the outcome. I'm seriously hoping we have some other solutions in mind though, it'd be mental if we don't sign anyone in January.
