Hope Drinkwater is fit and able to make some difference.
Cannot go with Baka & Luiz as recognized Central Midfielders.

 

Well it's hit the fan big time now with Kante injured as well as Morata. We're left with a wet behind the ears kid Bakayoko, and maybe Drinkwater if he ever gets fit, a very ordinary 3rd choice fill in, to carry the day along with Fabregas, a part timer now for my money. Surely Drinkwater was only bought to partner Kante due to their success at Leicester, never to play a leading role.
Fortunately, apart from the Roma games, our opponents for the next few games might suit Fabregas' style. As Iv'e said until I'm driven to distraction, we have been utterly hopeless in strengthening our midfield apart from Kante, for the last 5 seasons, and are paying the price every time we run on the pitch. Midfield is far more important than striker in my book, control the mid, you run the game. Look at Man Utd with Felliani and Matic, 2 players who were misfits until they teamed up. Bakayoko might be our go to man one day, but get in Veratti I say, or Courtinho or Kevin de Bruyen all 3 run the show and create so much for their front men, we haven't had one since Lampard.

 

Exactly with Matic in there even duds like Lukaku & Pogba are world beaters.

 

It's interesting that you see Pogba and Lukaku as duds. It looks more like they need to have players around them to allow them to play their natural game. When they do, they shine. Matic was hot and cold for us because of our style of play, and Jose realised in his team , different player. Unfortunately Conte doesn't get the players he wants, so he is constantly trying to push square pegs into round holes. Find a couple of round pegs, and our strikers and wide players will be transformed. It's always about the team, not just the individuals.

 

Matic played well with Fabregas in our midfield in 2015, when we played a back four, maybe because if Fabregas went too far forward, Cahill would be able to move forward and fill the gap or someone like Oscar or Willian could back track and plug the hole, seeing as Fabregas has no legs.
But with a Back three, Matic and Fabregas is far too static a midfield, and Matic and Kante was far too defensive.
Kante is one part of the puzzle in that midfield, just hoping Baka and/or DFD becomes the second

Amen to that. I am not convinced Drinkwater was bought to do anything more than play beside Kante to rotate the midfield . I don't see him as a main man, but I'm no great shakes when assessing players potential. I hope he really does turn out to be better than I expected
