Ballymacoll send 3 to the July Sales next week and I'm surprised there is not more. I suppose the surprise sale was Desert Isle (Fastnet brother to Fiorente) as there were some good reports on him. So they now have 18 in training but the paucity of runners is worrying. Tomorrow Abingdon was supposed to go for the Lancashire Oaks but has been withdrawn, presumably because of the soft ground. She's had an entry for the Yorkshire Oaks but needs a run over 12f before that.

One positive thing is the news that Arab Spring is back on the gallops. This 6yo colt has never had a full season yet and has only run 8 times. He's entered for the Juddmonte but again must be rusty and needs a run or two before that.

A Royal raid on Scotland this Friday. The Queen visits Musselburgh Racecourse and has a Trixie on Elementary, Bonhomie and Forecaster.

Maths Prize looks a nice colt with plenty of scope. Good debut and his next outing is eagerly awaited.

The Queen's season is looking likely to be her best since the '70s in terms of races won and money earned. Dartmouth's 3rd in the KG helped but the most important performances may have been Maths Prize's maiden win and Diploma's victory at York. Put back to 10f she absolutely sluiced up to gain her first listed win and is now Group bound. The Queen looks set to have a record year in terms of wins as so far only 3 2yos have run.
Tomorrow the first 'brought-in' 2yo of the year appears at Ascot. A colt called Seniority, he was bred by Darley and is like Dartmouth by their champion sire Dubawi. Trained by Haggas who can ready a newcomer he may go close in this maiden for unraced 2yos.

Meanwhile Ballymacoll's dreadful year continues. Even their flagbearer Abingdon (who has given them their only 2 wins this year) was firmly put in her place by Fireglow at Newmarket (a filly who had previously been a well beaten 2nd behing the Queen's Diploma). She was ridden differently and it was not a particularly true run race so she should be given another chance.
Arab Spring finally reappeared at Haydock and after a 14 month lay-off ran a decent race. Hopefully they'll get a group race out of him before the end of the season. Canonbury (daughter of Islington) reappeared after a 10 month pause and though not looking a world-beater did look as if she could win a race.

But it's oh so disappointing that this once fine stud can manage only 2 wins from only 25 runs (from 13 runners) this season. The one sign of a 2yo has been an entry of Eleanora Duse's full-sister Counterweight,: though later withdrawn. Otherwise 2yos are disappearing and the big hope must be the Frankel colt Rainbow Legacy. Yet he is out of the hugely disappointing mare Gift Range. All doom and gloom from me on this outfit I'm sorry to say.

Meanwhile the more robust Royal team may get to 20 winners for the season by the end of this week. They seem to have horses entered everywhere in the next few days. Ballymacoll have no entries in the next week!

Ballymacoll's first 2yo Counterweight appears today and will be watched with interest. She starts at lowly Wolverhampton, but remember Conduit's 2yo victory was there. Eleanora Duse's debut was a non-winning one so maybe Counterweight will have the usual Stoute introduction. She has been mentioned on the gallops alongside another Ballymacoll 2yo called Superiotycomplex who pedigree-wise stood out back in March. Her elder half-sister Abingdon runs on Thursday in the Galtres Stakes and with Atzeni aboard must have chances.
This time last year you'd have given Arab Spring a chance to be placed in the International but a year on with only one run a few weeks ago it will take a mammoth effort to get in the money. A more certain opportunity is Canonbury winning her maiden on Sunday.

The Queen has two at Ripon today and both must have chances. The attractive colt Maths Prize goes for the Nursery and is giving piles of weight away to his two opponents. Small fields are always tricky but this colt seems very straightforward and should show his class. Saturday could be a big day for the Royal team with Diploma surprisingly dropping down to 9f for the listed Strensall Stakes. On her last run at York you'd imagine she could be OK at this trip but it is a tough field. Forth Bridge is also entered on the same card in the '3yo Ebor' the Melrose Stakes. If he can progress from his last victory he must have chances. Looking to the future the most important entry is Saturday's date in the Solario for Seniority. He has entries in the Royal Lodge and Dewhurst so is highly thought of.

On the Newmarket gallops mentions have been made for a colt called Swiftsure who is by Dubawi out of a Barathea mare called La Sylphide. Along with Seniority he is another Darley-bred 'brought-in' 2yo colt running in Royal colours. Some older members of this forum may remember representatives of this family from the '70s and '80s as this is a Wildenstein family. Ancestors are Vacarme who HRAC trained and Lester Piggott rode to win the Richmond Stakes (but was then disqualified much to Wildenstein's annoyance: some say the start of Piggott's departure from Warren Place), Virunga (who was unfortunate to keep being beaten by fillies like Allez France, Dahlia and Mysterious) and the Peter Walwyn trained Vitiges. There seems to be a concerted effort to give the Queen ammunition for next year's Derby.

The introduction of 2yos has been slow for these 2 owner-breeders this year. The Queen has had 3 run with 2 winning. Maths Prize has won twice but is difficult to gauge as his combined winning distances comes to about a length. He looks an improver but difficult to say just how far he will improve. A sale to Hong Kong would not surprise me. Seniority was disappointing on his 2nd start and will have to be watched next time out. On Saturday the Queen has two 2yos making their debuts.
The first is Frontispiece who goes in the first at Ascot. He was one of only 2 of her 2yos given a Derby entry so something must have been thought of him. He is by Sharmadal out of a mare called Free Verse. She was by Danehill Dancer out a black type mare called Fictitious who is a full-sister to the Ribblesdale winner Phantom Gold. Free Verse was a winning 2yo (over 6f and 7f) and won again as a 3yo. You've got to think the Royal Stud likes this mare as after this first foal they sent her to Sharmadal again and then to Sea the Stars. Stoute had the much touted Frankel colt Rainbow Legacy entered in this race but at the declaration stage chose to go with Frontispiece. Those of you who read the gallops reports will know Rainbow Legacy was getting rave reviews so was probably ready. Frontispiece has been under the radar, so I take it as a plus that he is in the race. Balanced with this is the dire first time out record of Stoute. If the price is interesting a small each way investment is probably the right thing.
The second debutant is With One Accord, an Acclamation filly out of a new mare called Raymi Coya. Her first foal Make Fast made a winning debut last year and though small seems of reasonable ability. I'd suggest this Acclamation filly's debut at Wolverhampton is watched this time.
An interest is suggested in the Queen's other runner at Ascot tomorrow and that is the 3yo filly Labyrinth. Hopefully she will do a lot better than Diploma and Forth Bridge at York who could not have been more disappointing.

The dire season of Ballymacoll continues with just 3 wins and all by Abingdon. She looks a pretty good filly and will need to step up to Group class now. Their first 2yo, Counterweight, was a total disaster and finished a well-beaten last. One wonders what is happening and even what is Stoute doing running a filly that either doesn't have a chance or a clue. The reports on Rainbow Legacy could not have been more positive and this colt is an important hope for Ballymacoll.

On 2014/2015 form Arab Spring should win this race today. Abingdon has an entry for the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes next week.

Ballymacoll at last had another winner other than Abingdon. Arab Spring put in a sparkling performance on the all-weather at Kempton to easily take the September Stakes. I would think a Group 2 race somewhere would now be the target. Still an entire, this colt may be kept in training for a final year or sold to Australia or somewhere like that. The keeping in training of 5 older horses by Ballymacoll this season has been a failure. All 5 have run and, apart from this win, a 2nd by the filly Yarrow at Pontefract has been the most noteworthy performance. Two of them should have been put in foal.

Abingdon runs in the Park Hill Stakes tomorrow at Doncaster. She deserves to be in the race and the biq question must be whether she will stay the extended 14f of the Fillies St Leger. The main problem is her sire Street Cry who is usually associated with 8 to 10f offspring. Abingdon seemed to take the 12f of the Galtres Stakes in her stride and seems an uncomplicated horse, so she may get the extra distance. Her pedigree is interesting in that usually you find just the distaff side of the pedigree being bred by the breeder. In Abingdon’s case Ballymacoll owned and bred both of her grand-dams (Hellenic [Yorkshire Oaks winner and 2nd St Leger] and Helen Street [Irish Oaks winner and 3rd Yorkshire Oaks]). If you go back 2 generations, then of her 16 ancestors Ballymacoll owned and bred 4 of them (La Milo [dam of Troy], Boulevard [half-sister to Sun Prince], Homeric [2nd St Leger and 3rd Arc de Triomphe] and Sea Venture [ancestress of Fiorente and Islington]). Abingdon really is an advertisement for the activities of the Ballymacoll Stud over the last 40 years.

On Friday Stoute had the Ballymacoll big hope Rainbow Legacy entered at Sandown but again he’s been withdrawn. It’s getting frustrating. He does run Canonbury at Chester on Friday and this latest daughter of Islington is fancied to score with the admirable Graham Gibbons in the saddle.

Canonbury went in for Ballymacoll, with GG delivering the goods. But Rainbow Legacy's debut was woeful and he could turn out to be Frankel's first big exception.

Meanwhile the Queen is up to 22 winners with two fillies going in recently in fair handicaps. There should be more to come especially from the 2yos. Today Forth Bridge runs at Haydock but is the outsider so not expected to win. However his last run was too bad to be true as his form before that looked very good. He's been galloping with Bell's Big Orange and I'm expecting a better run from him this time. The next impoertant horse to run looks to be the 2yo Swiftsure next week.

I don't often mention the jumpers but of course the Royal Stud has a few jumping mares, the best known of which is Romantic Dream (the dam of Close Touch). The Queen often gives her horses good names but she's rather excelled herself with the somewhat risque naming of Romantic Dream's Mount Nelson yearling: a filly called Hamilton's Fantasy. Good to know she keeps her sense of humour.

Are things appearing better (not much) because they are or because I've finally retired? Swiftsure (Queen) made his debut at Salisbury and despite being shuffled back 3 furlongs out ran on well to finish a respectable 2nd to Make Time. Moore gave him a fairly gentle introduction and he looks a colt with a future. He was beaten 5 lengths but the winner's debut had been a nose second to the Queen's Frontispiece. Make Time may now go for the Racing Post Trophy so that speaks volumes for Frontispiece.
The Queen has a couple of interesting runners tomorrow when Labyrinth is on a recovery mission after her awful display at Ascot. I'm more hopeful for the improving Pure Fantasy who gets 7lb taken off her back by Charlton using the promising claimer Egan.

Ballymacoll is still languishing on 5 winners but must have been reassured by the much improved run of Counterweight. Having had a dreadful almost tailed-off debut she appeared at Leicester and ran a very encouraging 2nd to what looked a useful Godolphin debutant. Fatally this has encouraged me to think Pivoine may run a respectable race at Newmarket tomorrow. By Redoutes Choice he is out of a Montjeu half-sister to Fiorente's dam called Fleur de Cactus. Ballymacoll have a Dalakhani half-brother to Pivoine but then unaccountably sold Fleur de Cactus without her having a filly. My thinking is that they shouldn't have done that and that Pivoine may be the best 2yo colt Ballymacoll have: gallop reports have been encouraging.
Arab Spring takes on his stablemate Kings Fete at Ascot tomorrow. If at his best he should win his 3rd Group 3.

Thought you might be interested in these quotes from the EBN after yesterday's Day One of the Book One Yearling Sale:

Breeder Philip Freedman of Cliveden Stud consigned a Dubawi colt (Lot 116) out of the [then Gr.2) Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Independence through Watership Down, and looked on as the yearling brought up 575,000gns. Independence was a very good racehorse, but proved an even better broodmare, foaling the sires Mount Nelson and Monitor Closely.

Freedman said: “I’m thrilled with the price and hope the family gets some more black-type on Friday – the full-sister, [Godolphin’s] Easy Victory, is entered in the [Gr.3] Oh So Sharp Stakes and [Gr.1] Fillies’ Mile.

“I have an Iffraaj filly out of Independence’s daughter Singsongwriter due to sell at Book 2, but I think she’ll be withdrawn now and go into training with Ed Dunlop.”

Freedman, who lives next door to Watership Down, said of the yearling: “He was in a field at the bottom of my garden all summer. It was a bit nerve-wracking every time I took the dogs for a walk!”

    And also:

A Ballymacoll Stud-bred daughter of Dubawi (Lot 76) was next into the ring and Ferguson had remained at his post to secure her, too. Boasting a page that was classic Ballymacoll, the filly was produced by the Spectrum mare Gift Range, who is a sister to two of the stud’s top-class performers Golan and Tartan Bearer.

David Egan, who prepped the filly from his Corduff Stud base, said: “We’ve had her since early August and she’s been a very nice, straightforward filly.”

A nice winner for Ballymacoll last night in the shape of PIVOINE (Redoute's Choice/Fleur de Cactus).

He's the first foal out of the mare who is a winning daughter of Desert Beauty (dam of some useful sorts including Japanese winner Hyblon), in turn daughter of Hellenic.

Yes pN Pivoine looks to have something about him. Why did they sell the mare after only two colt foals? She's a Montjeu sister to Fiorente's dam and from the (so far) best branch of the Hellenic family. Even if they are selling Ballymacoll it still doesn't make sense.

Swiftsure should win today but no price.

The Queen has a 3rd brought in horse from Darley running tomorrow at Newbury. For once it's a filly and called Silent Approach By New approach, the dam (by Danehill) was 2nd in the French 1000G, and the grand-dam was 2nd in 1000G. This is the family of Dante.
Doesn't look a particularly difficult heat and she should go close.

With the sad injury to Freddie Tylicki I don't have much stomach for this. A rider I really rated who at last seemed to be getting his dues. I was always delighted to see him on a horse I had an interest in as horses seemed to run for him. A time of enormous sadness.

Return of Mares has come out and the Royal Stud's matings in 2016 (next year's foals) are of interest for different reasons. First, if Dubawi is the sire of the moment then by hook or by crook the Royal mares are getting plenty of coverage with him. Estimate was already known about but she is joined by Enticement (dam of Diploma), Golden Stream (full-sister to Flight of Fancy), memory (dam of Recorder) and Free Verse (dam of Frontispiece). Not a bad set of potential foals with Epsom 2020 being the target no doubt.

Last year 3 mares were sent to Toronado and that number has been maintained: so a big investment in that novice sire. The big surprise is that 3 and possibly 4 mares have been sent to Cable Bay (his first season). Must say I don't understand this but it makes more sense when you see where the stallion stands and that is Highclere. In fact two other Royal mares visit the Highclere stallion Paco Boy, which is more understandable.

No mares have been sent to Galileo (whose fertility has dropped slightly in 2016, though that may be a one-off))but second-season mare, Silver Mirage (Oasis Dream half-sister to Flight of Fancy) was covered by Frankel. Last year's Frankel bride (Daring Aim: a Daylami half-sister to Silver Mirage and dam of several winners) went to Golden Horn.

    End of Term

Everything considered the Queen had a good year with Dartmouth ensuring she won more prize-money than ever before (though in terms of achievement does not compare with previous years) and her stable of runners as a whole winning 23 races, which is her joint-best score in the last 20 years (even if wins tailed off towards the end of the season as 30 looked possible mid-year). There were a few disappointments in that Recorder (Haggas) did not recover from his 2yo injury so did not go back into training and Light Music didn’t appear to train on. Of the other 3yos the filly Diploma (Stoute) looked useful and may possibly stay in training. Other 3yos were quite ordinary.

There were few 2yo winners though the once-raced Frontispiece (Stoute) looked distinctly interesting and his career should be followed as he could be group class. A couple of other 2yos showed promise (Seniority and Swiftsure, both brought in colts by Dubawi) and their first 3yo runs should be monitored.

As regards the trainers Stoute had a good season, but most consistent of all was Charlton who with 3 horses had 3 winners of a total of 4 races. Most interesting of his was Maths Prize who won twice as a 2yo and seems to have a lot of scope. His one shot at listed company found him out though.

Hannon and Balding did not trouble the scorer in 2016 and Bell won a few races with what seemed a moderate lot. After a good 2015 Haggas had winners but a disappointing year after 2015's promise.

Ballymacoll looked as if they would have a one-horse season as Abingdon who won 3 races was the only one of their representatives to win by the end of July. In the end they had 4 winners of 6 races. The plan to have so many older horses was a disaster with only Arab Spring scoring: he stays in training as an entire 7yo. Some promise appeared near the season end when Pivoine won well and was their solitary 2yo winner. He at least gives us something to look forward to.

Hopefully with their last full season in 2017 we'll see Ballymacoll go out with a bang.
