I have to say I was surprised to see Lady Howard de Walden's name, I always thought that she had little interest in the horses and that she would have sold off her final few by now, but evidently not!

She kept 3 of the old Plantation stud families when she sold that stud but sadly not the Kris family. She has one 2yo this year and, two yearlings and 2 foals at the Avington Stud.

Mark Dixon has been beset with problems and hopefully things will start to improve. He lost his 2yo Fishing Boat, and Forte has been retired after the O'Meara experiment failed. La Superba has not quite fired this year and has been sent to Germany in an effort to get black type. Then the improving Lazio injured himself on his way to the races soi is hors de combat for now. Tough times.....

That leaves Cinque Port to carry the colours and hopefully he'll appear soon.

For now a glimpse of a possible better future with Prowess and her Frankel foal (a half-sister [actually3/4] to Oaks winner Talent).

Things have been very quiet for these 3 owner-breeders. Mark Dixon has had his 4yo filly La Superba get a 2nd place in a listed event in Germany but that's about it.
Today one of his two 2yos makes his debut. Good news was emanating from Richard Hughes yard about Cinque Port earlier in the season but that enthusiasm was dampened when he went through a growth spurt. Hughes hasn't done badly as a first year trainer but has not had a first-time out 2yo winner so it's unlikely Cinque Port will break that duck today. However he must have some ability and is nicely bred being by Compton Place out of a Night Shift mare called Jump Ship, and he must now be judged ready. He is from the one family of Dixon's that has kept the nautical naming that Uncle Richard Hollingsworth kept to. Jump Ship is out of a full-sister to Yawl. Nearly all Yawl's descendants have tended to pull hard (as Talent did) but Jump Ship's produce have not showed that deficiency, nor at the same time have they showed the speed and class of their nieces, nephews and cousins. But the breeding is there and as a descendant of Oaks winner Bireme you have to say Cinque Port has some class in her pedigree.

By the way it is pronounced Sink port as any man of Kent (or even Kentish man) would tell you. Let's hope the commentator gets it right because he has need to and that he runs into a place.

Cattermole should know better. It's pronounced SINK and it ran very well

Nice win for Cliveden with Horseplay. Balding has done well with being sent 2 horses and having 2 winners.
Horseplay is a very leggy 2yo and if she develops condition over the winter she could improve further. She couldn't have won more easily.

I posted this on your other Breeders thread last week, but it's probably more applicable to this one with the Cliveden horses:

Breeder Philip Freedman of Cliveden Stud consigned a Dubawi colt (Lot 116) out of the [then Gr.2) Sun Chariot Stakes heroine Independence through Watership Down, and looked on as the yearling brought up 575,000gns. Independence was a very good racehorse, but proved an even better broodmare, foaling the sires Mount Nelson and Monitor Closely.

Freedman said: “I’m thrilled with the price and hope the family gets some more black-type on Friday – the full-sister, [Godolphin’s] Easy Victory, is entered in the [Gr.3] Oh So Sharp Stakes and [Gr.1] Fillies’ Mile.

“I have an Iffraaj filly out of Independence’s daughter Singsongwriter due to sell at Book 2, but I think she’ll be withdrawn now and go into training with Ed Dunlop.”

Freedman, who lives next door to Watership Down, said of the yearling: “He was in a field at the bottom of my garden all summer. It was a bit nerve-wracking every time I took the dogs for a walk!”

    And also:

A Ballymacoll Stud-bred daughter of Dubawi (Lot 76) was next into the ring and Ferguson had remained at his post to secure her, too. Boasting a page that was classic Ballymacoll, the filly was produced by the Spectrum mare Gift Range, who is a sister to two of the stud’s top-class performers Golan and Tartan Bearer.

David Egan, who prepped the filly from his Corduff Stud base, said: “We’ve had her since early August and she’s been a very nice, straightforward filly.”

Thanks pN. Really pleased for Freedman as this filly is a chance to keep a representative of the Fraulein family.
Also pleased he's planning to keep the Singersongwriter filly as that keeps the Independence family in the stud.

    End of Term

Lady Howard de Walden had a quiet year but did have an interesting 2yo filly winner in the shape of Gemina (Beckett) who won on her debut and then ran 2nd to a fair colt on her only other start. As a half-sister to Gibeon (who did not run all season for some reason) she could be a useful handicapper next year.

Mark Dixon had a miserable year and did not have a winner. It was a mistake trying again with Forte who was not interested in racing. Cinque Port put up the best performance of the year when 2nd in an AW maiden then flunked his next start. Apparently he goes sprinting next year. Dixon's focus will be on his yearlings this year and his foalings too. For now it's treading water.

Cliveden Stud had a mixed year. New trainer Balding took pride of place with his two horses both winning. If there is a horse for next year then it is his Horseplay who who won like a good thing on his 2nd start after a mid-season 4th in a good race. She should be a better 3yo.
