Accrington v Pompey: Match Postponed. Pompey’s League One match at Accrington has been postponed because of a frozen pitch. The game was scheduled to take place at the Crown Ground on Saturday, with the surface inspected this afternoon by a local EFL referee. He decided that the pitch – which has been protected by covers – was unplayable and with freezing temperatures expected overnight, it would not improve. A new date for the fixture will be arranged in due course.
Our next League fixture is not until the 16th, when we visit Fleetwood. Before that we have an FA Cup tie at Bristol City next Sunday, followed by a trip to Peterborough in the EFL Trophy two days later
Is this a good or bad thing? Maybe the enforced rest.will enable the players to come back refreshed for the second half of the season. The downside will be a lack of match sharpness, combined together with the cold weather could result in injuries when competitive matches resume again. The other problem is fitting in at least 29 matches if no further progress is made in the Cup competitions. Or it 30 with last season's EFL final still to be played? Add in the livelihood of more Covid cancellations and the weather, it is going to be difficult for any club to complete it's fixture list between now and the 8th of May. Something will have to give.
Happy New Year to all frequenters of this site. It seems we are in for a soccer feast or a soccer famine in the next few months. I have not heard mention - in a soccer context - the long term effects of Covid. In fact all info on it appears to be sketchy but apparently approx 40% of cases suffer long tern effects akin to chronic fatigue that lasts for months or more. Further, this does not just apply to the elderly. if this is the case the continuation of the current wave of infections could significantly deplete squads for months. It will not just be a case of waiting a fortnight and getting back to training for all.
