Jake Daniels: Blackpool player says coming out is 'a massive relief https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61467159
Hopefully one day we get to a stage where players don't have to come out and do interviews etc because it's just an excepted life choice without fear of backlash
Really happy to see this happen, I hope it opens the door for other gay players that want to come out. And next season, opposition fans of a certain stripe and bigotry will have the perfect chance to prove what massive ****s they are.
I always kept my sexuality a secret, I wish I had had the courage to be more open about it, but it just wasn’t the right atmosphere. Like you say, times are much better now, so hopefully we’re moving towards it generally just being part of everyday life.
Nobody should feel the need to keep things that make them happy a secret ( unless it's being a Leeds fan )
I can’t tell you what difference this would have made to me growing up. Congrats Jake. I wouldn’t have dreamt of coming out at 17
Chelsea's £2.6billion takeover has been thrown into doubt once again after Roman Abramovich refused to accept a sale structure proposed by the UK Government, according to reports. The Government are proposing that all of the £2.6billion from Chelsea's sale to the Boehly-led consortium goes into a holding account before it is satisfied the proceeds will then go to a foundation to help victims of the war in Ukraine. However, Abramovich and Chelsea are calling for the £1.6billion owed from Fordstam to be repaid to Jersey-registered Camberley International Investments and frozen before going to the foundation. This is considered to be a 'red line' by the Government, who insist doing so would break the sanctioning rules imposed on Abramovich as there would be no legal guarantees to stop the money from falling to the Russian or his beneficiaries. The clock is ticking for them to secure a licence to continue football operations, with the special licence granted to them by the Government amid sanctions imposed on Abramovich set to expire on May 31. The Premier League also has its AGM on June 8, and if Chelsea are not fully licenced by then they will not be eligible for a place in next season's Premier League - nor can they be selected as a Champions League or Europa League representative by the FA https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...le-structure-throws-2-6bn-takeover-doubt.html
Well done to the young Blackpool player - but why is this news? It’s 2022. A persons sexuality has zero relevance to their occupation. It’s just news paper ****e
Well the player clearly doesn’t think that’s true, which suggests we’ve still a way to go before that applies to football.
Because the last out male professional in Britain in his industry killed himself and football has got a long way to go before it proves it is fully inclusive.
Is it 'football' (whatever that defines) where the problem is, or the media's portrayal of it? I can't think of anyone I know that's remotely interested in someone's sexual orientation.
I think theirs still a small amount of people who would have issue with it for some reason, but as per usual and as with everything, the media make it worse and make it a much bigger issue ( or seem it ) to get clicks/sell papers/TV channel views etc
Both. And that’s good news, although I’m not sure it’ll be a huge amount of comfort to the people in positions where they find it difficult to come out. It’s almost like LGBT youth are twice as likely to take their own lives or something.
The suicide thing is far more complex than other peoples reactions to their preference. I don't see it being an issue in many other sports, especially female ones, where they're open about their sexual preference. I genuinely think it's is more a mountain built by the media for clicks.
