It could easily be a Zundapp - they did make bikes with the flat engine; I called it Beemer cos I seem to recall (but I could EASILY be wrong) the Zundapps had a more oval tank badge. Good call BT ...
Just looked at old Zundapp on google, they all seemed to have square rocker covers. I assumed BM due to the barrel/rocker cover shape and the pinstriping on the tank and mudguards.
