20 minutes gone and we’ve been fairly controlled. Had a few decent chances to score already where we maybe should have done a bit better. PSV have been quite well organised though. Their full backs are their weakest point, so need to isolate them more. Need to move the ball a bit quicker when in their final third too.
We’ve been winning the ball high up and capitalising on PSV’s sloppiness in possession but we’re not converting them into actual chances. The final ball is either just a fraction too late or too early.
HT. 0-0. Complete domination, but we’ve not really clicked in the final third. We’ve had a number of shots off target and promising situations where moves broke down because players were on different wavelengths. We need to move the ball faster when we’re looking to break and when we’re on the edge of their box. Too many times we’ve played a ‘safe’ pass rather than a killer ball. Hopefully we’ll get more cutting edge in the second half.
Agh, this is infuriating. We’re doing everything right apart from score, we keep fluffing our lines in front of goal.
FT. 1-0. 4/4 wins, qualification for the KO stages confirmed. Just need 1 point from our final 2 games to confirm top spot. The scoreline didn't do us justice, we should have been out of sight midway through the second half. They had a couple of half-decent chances on the break, but Jesus, Saka, Tierney, Nketiah, Vieira, Gabriel all missed decent opportunities. We counter pressed well and won possession frequently, but just couldn't get the finishing touch until Xhaka scored. We were a bit profligate in front of goal, but the main thing is we won and kept a clean sheet against a decent side. The commentator was saying PSV have only lost 2 of their last 23 European away fixtures, so they clearly know how to set up in away fixtures. Also - I wasn't overly impressed by Gakpo or Simons, who are supposedly two of the hottest prospect in Europe right now. But it's probably unfair to judge them solely on this game. Onto Southampton
