Yes Dai your right, none of the managers wanted it did they.

First up was Arsenal - which was not far off first team for them
Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Gibbs, Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, Coquelin, Podolski, Gervinho SUBS: Risicky, Oxlaid Chamberlain, Chamakh
First team premier league starts 2012/13 = 237 (+41 subs). Not bad for a total of 418 available positions in a season. The subs had 18 (+17) - so now up to 255/418 = 61% of Arsenals first teamers.

Next up was Aston Villa - which again, for them at the time was pretty much first team
Given, Clark, Bennett, Baker, Lowton, N'Zogbia, Delph, Bannan, Agbonlahor, Benteke, Weimann SUBS: Bent
246 (+34 subs). The subs had 8 (+8) = 254/418 = 61%

Then this season they played Chelsea, not first team for most of it, but they conceded 3 goals after their big hitters came on
Cech, Christensen, Zouma, Cahill, Azpilicueta, Ramires, Oscar, Mikel, Salah, Drogba, Remy SUBS: Fabregas, Willian, Hazard
83 + (48 subs), The subs had 67 (+16) = 150/286 = 52%

Finally we have Sunderland
Mannone, Jones, O'Shea, Brown, van Aanholt, Álvarez, Larsson, Bridcutt, Johnson, Graham, Fletcher SUBS: Vergini, Honeyman, Wickham
146 (+27 subs). The subs had 47 (+4) = 193/297 = 65%

That looks a pretty good team for Sunderland, don't you agree.

So of a total 129 Premier League games, the total players that start games is 1,419

Of the players who took part in all 4 of those cup ties, there is a total of 852 premier league starts. Which means that 60% of the starting 11 of those 4 teams through their respective Premier League seasons, started

Funilly enough, that is the same percentage that Man City want Bony to play to deem us worthy of the £3m add-ons if they win the 3 trophies.

Would be interesting how many games those players listed spent injured during those seasons. Not to mention those who played in Europe too against the top teams.

 

Did you also know Dai that the players that played against us in the first leg were:

A double over Burnley sees our excellent win ratio over teams in the bottom half of the table continue, but it was an awful game to watch. Poor quality football by both sides

Having beaten Fulham away last season (Burnley replaced them), we are still 10 points better off than the corresponding fixtures last season and now move on to 40 points, a feat we didn't achieve until the final fixture of last season.

lol its what happens when your ill and bored

 

considering that we are not a selling club it seems the heart has left the team over the last year or so. Its been obvious to a few of us that we needed serious strengthening at the back for ages (a lot better now ! )and the wingers have not been able to cross a ball ( bit better now but not much ? )and maybe some players are getting a bit old for the pace up here,( some gone some could do better ? ) plus a lot of bottling out and dropped heads have appeared from nowhere, ( hope not to see that again ! )strength in depth seems like a dirty word to those in charge. And dont they see or care about what the fans see as obvious cause they dont seem to be doing anything to sort it either on the training ground or in the boardroom ? ( hmmmmm )

We may well have seen the best that we will get at this level but i hope not i feel some major surgery is needed sharpish before the blip becomes a rut !( got some tidy new boys in but blowing hot n cold to much )
Or it could just be that weve been spoilt rotten in recent years and expect better all the time ? i dont, just as long as we see a fighting committed effort from the team it will be easier to take the poor displays of late, i think the top half teams have been poor in general up till xmas and were lucky to be top half at the mo, and dont have a god given right to be top 10 but should have the heart to want it , survival is still priority as its always been up here cause the team could drop like a stone easily if not sorted out pronto. ( still the same ? )

Survival is the main priority and anything else is a bonus.....We are doing enough to survive quite comfortable so far......

 

Tbh Dai, I think we've gone passed the realms of 'just surviving'.

 

I hope so Valley but its always a relief to get past the 40 points mark still.

 

Not after just 5 games valley. Anyone with a bad few games can go from the top half to the bottom in an instant. Its all about survival and will be till at least 3/4 of the way through the season and if we are in touching distance with a European place then then we can talk about trying to qualify, But for a very long time all we should be concentrating on is survival and nothing else. With cup games i always believe we should field our strongest team to give us the best chance of winning....

 

I think any team not aiming for the Top 6 or 7 see survival as the first priority and then take it from there for the remainder of the season.

 

We have 9 points from 6 games = 1.5 points per game. Over the whole season that's 57 points.

I know extrapolation is a pointless and dangerous technique
