EPL 21/02/2015 : Aston Villa 1-2 Stoke City

After a good start, culminating in Sinclair's opening goal for AVFC, this game became very scrappy, with too much heading tennis, which played into Stoke's hands. On the plus side, AVFC showed more attacking intent, getting those bodies into the box and forcing corners. The negative was not the style of play, but constant misplaced passes, which led to loss of possession and the breakdown of our moves. There was frequent use of the long ball, to launch attacks, but most of these long balls were intercepted by the Stoke defence. Stoke equalised just before half-time. Watching the game progress from Upper Trinity Row C, I had the feeling that we would get yet another last minute kick in the teeth and so it proved. Another Villa attack broke down, Stoke counter-attacked, Vlaar conceded the penalty as the last man, was dismissed and Stoke scored their winner in injury time.
This frustrating defeat sees AVFC drop to 19th (on goal difference) in the EPL.

Match Report : AVFC - Sinclair goal not enough as Moses strikes late on

    Attendance : 31,880

Manager's verdict : AVFC - Sherwood devastated with late Stoke loss

EPL 28/02/2015 : Newcastle United 1-0 Aston Villa

That was an open game with much more attacking play from AVFC, getting the ball forward at every opportunity and giving Benteke in particular the chances to score.
It was just Sod's Law that :
    a} We lost.
b} We had the ball in the net twice, but both 'goals' were offside.
AVFC remain 19th in the EPL.

Match Report : AVFC - Newcastle 1-0 Villa - Cisse sees off spirited Villa

    Attendance : 51,573 (BBC)

Manager's verdict : AVFC - Sherwood cranking up the pressure

EPL 03/03/2015, Aston Villa 2-1 West Bromwich Albion

AVFC, on the front foot virtually throughout the match, made goal-scoring opportunities, took one, had the setback of the opposition equalising but nevertheless did not give up and finally ... got that stroke of luck, a last minute penalty (thanks, Ben Foster), which Benteke cooly converted. MOTM for me though was Ciaran Clark.
Now this is not the end ...
It is not even the beginning of the end ...
    But it is, perhaps,
    The End of the beginning.

Match Report : AVFC - Villa 2-1 WBA report: Benteke last-gasp penalty earns derby win

    Attendance : 31,272 (SSN)

Manager's verdict : AVFC - Villa 2-1 WBA: Jubilant Sherwood - We're alive and kicking

This has been a good midweek for AVFC, out of the bottom three to 17th with our win against the Albion, whilst all the other teams lost their games.
Next weekend {07/03/2015} the only EPL game will be QPR v Tottenham, so I will say what I said in my youth (it's a long story) ...
    Come On you Spurs !

Should be a fine FA Cup weekend, expecting Villa-WBrom to be a cracking local derby, obviously with the added FA Cup 1/4 Final importance.

Click here for a recap on last round's victory over Leicester (along with all the other FA Cup 5th round games), with its alleged inspirational half-time team-talk from the not-yet-manager-at-that-time Sherwood.

Putting theory into practice ... and getting results in consequence.

AVFC - Sunderland v Villa: Sherwood - Tempo is absolutely key

I have come in and stuck to my beliefs - making sure the lads can play with a tempo in training which I want them to transfer into the games.
    - Tim Sherwood

EPL Saturday, 14/03/2015 : Sunderland v Aston Villa, KO 15:00 hours.
