Ever wonder where the phrase Honky Tonk comes from? Dick Emery's Clarence, HT Women-Stones Honky comes from African-Americans describing European immigrants, especially Hungarians. Tonk was the name of a piano manufacturer, often bought by brothels. It means a white brothel.
One for the road? When prisoners were transferred to be hanged from Newgate Prison, now the Old Bailey to Tyburn, Marble Arch the condemned stopped off at a pub in Holborn to have One For The Road. The Newgate Prison warden who escorted the prisoners to Tyburn was not allowed to drink. He was on the wagon.
