    FAMOUS BARNSLEY FOLK

    ALAN BARTON

Alan Leslie Barton (16 September 1953 – 23 March 1995) was a British singer and member of the hit-making duo Black Lace.[1] Their hits included "Agadoo", "Superman" and their United Kingdom Eurovision Song Contest 1979 seventh-place finisher "Mary Ann" in Jerusalem.[2][3]

    Career
Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire,[1] Barton replaced Chris Norman in Smokie in 1986, recording six albums with them, and touring extensively as their lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.[1] He was the lead singer on Smokie's revival of their hit, "Living Next Door to Alice", recorded with comedian Roy 'Chubby' Brown, as "Living Next Door to Alice (Who the F**k Is Alice)".[1] In the early 1990s, he released his only solo album, Precious (1991) and two accompanying singles: "July 69" (1990) and "Carry Your Heart" (with Kristine Pettersen) (1991).[4]

Barton died in March 1995, at the age of 41, from injuries incurred when Smokie's tour bus crashed during a hailstorm in Cologne, Germany.[1][5]

He is buried at Liversedge cemetery, West Yorkshire.

    MACS VIEW
Manager, players and fans all agreed that Satursday's defeat at Luton was unacceptable, seems to becoming the norm, feast or famine with us and this is no gimme either against a side which are young and will give it all to the final whistle.
Need to defend better than we did on Saturday and need to actually stick in a performance full stop.
The Tykes have some useful attacking players but personal view still think they have issues at the back
Personal view the contract issues of some players are affecting the club needs to be settled sooner rather than later

The relentless Championship continues on Tuesday night with North End’s last away game before Christmas, when they head across the Pennines to face Valérien Ismaël’s Barnsley at Oakwell.

Both sides had contrasting weekends, with our midweek hosts in south Yorkshire picking up a derby day victory over Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

Since the change of manager, the Reds have been in good form and currently sit 11th in the table, second only to table-toppers Norwich City in the form table, their only recent blemish being against AFC Bournemouth live on Sky a week last Friday.

The Lilywhites had two positive results against Barnsley in 2019/20, but they will count for nothing come Tuesday night, in another behind closed doors encounter, Barnsley – like Preston – being in a Tier three area.

    Team News
Manager Alex Neil lost Brad Potts at the weekend through a calf issue and the former Barnsley man will need a late check before Tuesday’s game at Oakwell.

Already definitely ruled out are Louis Moult and Billy Bodin (both knee), Ben Pearson (ankle) and Patrick Bauer (Achilles).

Valérien Ismaël will have to make a change to his back line, as Aapo Halme picked up a toe injury in Saturday’s derby win over Sheffield Wednesday, ruling him out for up to four weeks. It's a toe injury. That’s a big blow for us and for him.

For the Reds Jordan Williams also isn’t ready yet, although he is set to return to training this week.

    Match Officials
Tuesday’s game sees Dean Whitestone appointed as match official, his second PNE game this season, having taken charge of the 4-2 away win at Brentford back in October.

He refereed four North End games last season, including the home game with QPR - the last before lockdown in March and our home win over Charlton Athletic in late January.

The Northamptonshire official has refereed PNE games on 14 previous occasions, the first of which was at Bramall Lane back in October 2008.

He has officiated 11 games so far this campaign, issuing 15 cautions and no red cards – including Barnsley’s 3-0 defeat at Cardiff City earlier in the campaign.

Two of the stand-out PNE games he has been in charge of, were a previous 3-0 victory at Barnsley in August 2009, and a 3-1 triumph on the road at Doncaster in October 2012.

The rest of Tuesday's official will be made up of assistant referees Rob Merchant and Mark Dwyer, whilst the fourth official will be Tom Nield.

    Opposition View
Speaking to his official website barnsleyfc.co.uk Valérien Ismaël said: “Last season our results and performances against Preston were not good enough. It’s time to change more history. We need that ruthless nature again.

“Against Bournemouth we struggled with fatigue. We need to learn from that. When we get chances on Tuesday night, we need to be clinical and punish the opponent.

“Preston will be difficult, we expect a strong side, but we have prepared well and we have good momentum that we wish to continue, to keep up our good work.”

Victor Adeboyejo scored late on as Barnsley came from behind to beat Preston North End and earn a third consecutive Championship win.

Sean Maguire put North End ahead inside two minutes when he headed home after Cauley Woodrow failed to clear Paul Gallagher's corner.

Barnsley were level after the break as captain Alex Mowatt curled home for the hosts from long range.

They took the lead with 10 minutes to spare when Adeboyejo worked on to Woodrow's delivery to complete the turnaround.
The win moved Barnsley up to ninth in the Championship table, four points off the play-off places while Preston slip to 16th.

Barnsley came into the game off the back of three wins in their past four Championship matches, but they were on the back foot after Maguire's early header.

The Tykes found the net in the second half thanks to Mowatt's impressive strike that had Preston keeper Declan Rudd well beaten.

But Adeboyejo's late effort secured three points and fourth win from five league games.

    Preston manager Alex Neil:

"I don't think there was anything in it. Our biggest frustration is that we take an early 1-0 lead and we then have arguably the best chance of the match.

"We made a couple of bad decisions and we don't capitalise on it. Their first was a very good goal. Their second is my biggest frustration. It was a free-kick and we don't stand over the ball or kick the ball away.

"To be fair to the lad, it was a good finish, but it was absolutely criminal from us. We've lost a match and probably over the piece, we deserved a draw. The game's decided on a mistake which shouldn't happen at this level."

    Barnsley head coach Valerien Ismael:

"It was a really bad start but it was two game-changers for us. Just before half-time, Jack Walton made a big save to stay in it and the second game-changer was the substitution with Victor and Luke Thomas, who had a very good game.

"The second half was a big game with very good mentality. The transition game was more effective and the finishing was clinical this time.

"I'm very surprised from all the energy we can see in this team and I give the guys my big respect to win. It's a very important game (at Swansea) on Saturday for us against one of the best teams in the league."
