The Covid regulations are being changed at midnight to allow venues to be used for competitions. Seems that the last change omitted that....
Not sure if this is for here or politics. Anyway a coroner finally ruled that "smart" motorways (very few things have been so misnamed) contributed to two deaths. Apparently 38 have now died on them. (Actually, this might be for the No **** Sherlock thread also.) I can't believe that nobody thought of the potential dangers first. Instead we have billions spent, months (years if you add them all together) of disruption with 20 mile long roadworks, the things don't work and they kill people. Up there with the worst ideas ever methinks. And I'm reluctant to drive in the inside lane as a result lest I come into contact with a stranded car, and I'd be ****ting myself if I actually broke down in one. The answer? Is it closing them and restoring the hard shoulder? Not likely. It's more gantries, more warning signs, more refuge areas - probably have so many refuge areas that they eventually build a whole new hard shoulder, and all they will have done is added a new lane at frightening expense. And when they release figures saying it improves traffic flow I won't believe it. Because they will certainly have not included the disruption when they build the bastard things, nor the disruption every time they switch on them bastard signs - about 10 miles before the situation - which can't be found when you finally get there. When you hear the traffic reports, it's extremely common to hear massive tailbacks cause by vehicle breakdowns in what is a running lane - but should be the hard shoulder. But I'm sure it's a great ego trip for those who switch the signs on at least.
Here we go ... A widely-understood definition of "smart" X is that X operates akin to a minimum of human cognitive intelligence, and with no/little human involvement, "contributed to two deaths. " 1. Honest scientists/engineers by education + profession would demand to see the traffic flow models (to see the net improvements that the scheme is claimed to bring) . 2. Said engineers would demand to see the proposed designs/impls for the scheme, 3. Competent engineers would demand to see the "what if" lists for every solution proposal. 4. Honest bean counters would demand to see the 'TCOA' + Roi stated for realising the scheme. 5. Honest academia/industry/govt would (subject to IPR issues etc) put as much of 1-4 into the public domain as possible to allow a maximum scrunity So for these "smart highways" , my questions to you are : 1. How much of #5 do you believe to have been done ?? 2. How many of the N deaths to date do you believe were not on a #3 list ?? "But I'm sure it's a great ego trip for those who switch the signs on at least." If this is what happens, I refer you to my first remark.
You are bastard right there VH, a fekking disaster. They are built for one thing, charging us for road usage when electric cars start to cut car tax revenue. Cvnts.
