I have just listened to the "tribute" to Billy Bremner on the BBC series of great lives. I remember Billy coming into the team as a young winger,he was a good lad and always contributed to the team performance. I cannot remember ever thinking that we had an exceptional player in the making. It was not until he was moved into midfield that he began to transform into Superman. He progressed over the years to be a world class player and the best Captain Leeds have ever had. The fact that Leeds developed into the best team in the country did not suit the Media which was based in either Manchester or London. At that time it was rare for a player to be booked and very rare for anyone to be sent off. It has long been known in the FA cup that a team from a lower league think that their best chance might be to scrap if drawn against a better team. Many teams decided to take this option only to discover that Leeds could play or they could scrap. The Media decided that as Leeds won games played either way they must be the aggressors. The fact that Leeds were a very good team was overlooked by most of them, but not by John Arlott who was one of the best. He said quote " if every manager in the country were given his choice of player to add to his team some would no doubt toy with the idea of George Best but the realists to a man would have Billy Bremner". Well said John.
