It was an exciting and entertaining end to end game for the neutral, but a couple of things make me think we still have some way to go to be a genuine contender for promotion.

In my humble opinion, we are still guilty of ball watching, and as against Leeds we didn't play a pressing game and put Middlesbrough under much pressure when they had the ball.

And does anyone else think that Bentley's positioning and lack of commitment to get the ball when the pass across the face of goal was made partly was actually to blame for their first goal ? He had also left his near post wide open. He also came of a couple of long balls into the box that he was never going to get in the second half.

A point is a point though.

I actually watched the match in Oz, I think Palmer (ok he scored) is a liability, poor passing etc etc. Maybe he had an off day/

We didn’t win so people have to point out the negatives about the game. It was a very good game for the neutral and at the end I was happy to hang on for the point as I thought we were probably second best especially in the second half. You have to consider however we basically (and I do hesitate to use this) a scratch team out, now I know they are all part of the first team squad but trying to work our fit players into a workable formation was always going to be difficult, even more so when you have Massengo and Hunt (who is probably more defensive of our two right backs) also go down injured. For me I thought some of our approach play and passing was fantastic to watch. Elliasson has to be one of the best crossers (if not the best) in the Championship. I think it’s extremely harsh to blame Bentley for the first goal, it was a good cross into that corridor of uncertainty. Palmer was a liability and a luxury last season but certainly not this season. He’s one of our most improved players and him going off on Saturday (probably to protect him from a second booking) turned the game in Boro’s favour as he was certainly missed in that final period.

    From my armchair.
Absolutely loved the first half. It was fantastic, maybe not for the purists, but great to watch. Thought 2nd half we lost our belief till we went 2-1 down. I was then happy to get a point.
I think Bentley is light years better than Fielding and wouldn't find fault with him or anyone else.
I have to say Afobe impressed me the most playing in the hardest position. Apparently, if we can keep his mind happy, we have a gem in our midst.

We are doing as well as can be expected in the present circumstances. At the moment the division is a bit topsy turvey, some of the "expected teams" are not doing as they were supposed to !
Consensus has always been lets give it 10 games!, well come the start of OCTOBER we will nearly be there … and then lets see …. for me 15pts from 27 will be an achievement with present injuries etc …….……..

I think the officials spoiled the game, Wing should have been sent off for a second yellow and foul on Massinga. Then, the dubious offside rule - that goal took the wind from our sails.
All round a good performance, especially given our current injury crisis. Two weeks off now, so hopefully we can get some back fit and press on!

That ruddy offside rule is ridiculous.
The officials applied the law as it stands correctly.
    Imo the law's an ass.

To me the whole person should be beyond the last defender to be regarded offside. In regard to our performance I thought we did sort of O.K. considering we were missing 2 or 3 regulars but was miffed that we did not claim all 3 points when we should be making Ashton Gate a fortress where nobody leaves with any points.

I had the luxury of being in the box for this game. Downside was my guest were Boro fans. And the other one from my work was a gashead. He did admit he really liked the stadium and experience. My wife was also with me and wanted to enquire on cost of the box. I also got to hold the door open for Sir Steve and Mark Ashton.
Anyway the game is exactly the same as Loathsneyd said for me. I’m glad we’ve got Bentley, who I think is an improvement on any of last seasons and I’m a big fan of Maenpaa.
At the moment we’re playing makeshift centre and left back who showed his worth as he’s not done a bad job but looked really good when swapped with O’Dowda and went into midfield. I actually thought O’Dowda played well and looked more up for it than lately.

I thought the exact same thing about Bentley not getting anything on the cross at the time. I think that may be down to seeing it several times in slow mo though. In real time he had to protect his near post and perhaps the reaction time to get out to the ball just isn't as easy as it looks in super slowmo.

I do think in recent seasons city have often wilted when on a good run , near the top and favourites to win at home. We just seem to lack the self belief to grab the opportunity.

I was hoping it might be different this season but for now I'm not convinced. It is early days though so lets hope we can grow into it and finally get that promotion that SL deserves.

There are some odd subclauses in the offside rule.
    The deliberate back pass.
The problem is, a defender intersepts a through ball with an attacker in an offside position. He is under pressure so plays the ball to the keeper, it gets intercepted and a goal results.
The flag should have gone up from the initial pass as the offside player was interfering with play and forced the backpass.
If he had run from an onside position into an offside position then the pass was made, ok. But being in an offside position to start with, no.

100% agree, the game is too fast in play to know what will happen. In our game, did Moore even know about the rule, and what if he ducked and let Assombalonga in, would the linesman have called it correctly? I doubt it as replays show he was well behind the play, and there is no VAR in the Championship to save defenders.
It's an absurd rule that you can be, for argument's sake, yards offside when a ball is played, but if it gets a touch off an opponent on the way through, you are not offside..... it beggars belief.

Couldn't agree more, what a massive advantage he had when he received the ball.

The rule has been in place for a season at least. The player will and should know. It will be part of training.

Haven't seen your game guys so can't comment on the incident, but something as I understand it generally.

An opposition player must make a deliberate attempt to play the ball in order to play an opponent onside if he occupies an offside position when the ball was played. Only if the ball unintentionally deflects off a defender should he be judged to be offside. Your decision appears to be the reverse of one that we suffered last time in the Championship.

A Hoilett goal against QPR was disallowed for offside even though he was played on by a QPR defender. The QPR lad attempted to intercept the pass and only succeeded in playing it into the path of Hoilett who scored a perfectly good goal which was then disallowed. Hoilett was definitely in an offside position when the ball was played but the goal should have stood because he was played onside by the defender playing the ball.

As you can imagine, Warnock wasn't too happy on the touchline - is he ever?.........<laugh>

Are you saying Moore shouldn't have headed the ball ?

I've looked at it now. If Moore hadn't attempted that header, then Assombalonga would have been offside - that's if the lino saw it.

Apparently no, they said after the game, that is what played Assombalonga onside, even though he was in an offside position when the ball was clearly being played to him. It will be one hell of a fine line for a defender, Moore in this instance to leave it and hope the lino catches it.... You can't have this rule without VAR to back it up.

Theres a further complication for moore, in this instance.
He would have to have judged if he thought assombalonga was offside first. Thats why i caveated my earlier post with 'interfering with play'. Him being there forced moore into a decision. If hed been in an onside position, there was no decision to make.
If he wasnt in that position, moore may have made a different decision in how to deal with it.

Sorry, need a sit down, feeling faint.

Caught myself typing in support of brizzle.

My bad, never offside, great goal. :emoticon-0116-evilg

The linesman on the Doleman line was absolutely shocking a disgrace too the game.
