I liked the idea that even if you were from a Council estate and went to the local comprehensive that you would be able to excel and go to university with the grammar school kids and toffs. Trying to find £27K per kid nowadays is a huge, if not impossible, ask for lower income families. We have turned class into race now with the impression that there are no well-off BAME families who are more than able to fund their kid's education and at the same time ignoring the white working class who may well have privilege of skin colour but have got f.uck all in the bank and will never be able to go to uni.

Telling Nigel that he doesn't qualify for a grant to get a degree because Deyshauwn has been earmarked for funding instead but then say "don't worry, because you are white with privilege you will be fine and everything will work out for you" isn't much comfort. Nigel and Deyshauwn should be able to get a degree at no cost because they deserve to be there based on academic ability. They should both be expected to turn in a thesis with acceptable grammar and spelling. Spell check and grammar checks are free ffs, there are even apps you can download that will correct it for you. We are encouraging laziness and dropping the bar, business leaders have long been complaining of the lack of basic maths and English displayed by graduates. This knee-jerk Woke nonsense will only make matters worse.

The brighter kids would **** off the Uni, and get some real time work experience and money in their pockets. There's several examples of kids that did that being the managers of the graduates who also have the handicap of loans and limited work experience, with a low grade pass in some meaningless topic. A lot of the time, they have pretty much simply demonstrated that they struggle with academic subjects.

Not sure but ironically it was Macmillan's government that abolished tuition fees entirely for full-time resident students and mandated that local councils provide students with maintenance grants as well. Macmillan supported the post-war Keynesian consensus though. The Tories before Thatcher were in many ways 'to the left' of even Blair and Starmer's Labour.

I like the idea that everyone who is bright enough for university should be given the opportunity to go without being hamstrung by financial difficulties. There should also be a greater focus on vocational education and apprenticeships. As it stands, a private school thicko can go to uni, scrape a 2:2 in Politics, philosophy and economics and still get a job at his dad's mate's accounting firm whilst a comp-educated kid from a working-class background can graduate with a First and struggle.

No, I said it for a laugh.

    Yes, I'm serious <doh>

There should be no tuition fees, maintenance grants for students and harder entry requirements. You know, like in Scandinavian countries and the UK from 1962 to 1998...
