Watching Politics Live on BBC2 at lunchtime, one of the guests was Labour peer Shami Chakrabarti.

The subject of discussion was whether voters should be required to show identification when they turn up to vote.

When the Royal Mail are unable to deliver a parcel, they leave a red card and I have to take this and a form of photo identification to their depot to collect the parcel. That seems perfectly reasonable to make sure that the person collecting is the intended recipient.

Currently, if I want to go and vote, all I have to do is turn up and give a name and address. I could be any old Joe. I know that my neighbour is not going to bother coming, so I say that I am them and cast their vote. Then a couple of hours later I come back and vote for the old boy across the street who is housebound.

Ms Chakrabarti’s argument against requiring identification was that some members of society do not possess any photo identification and would be prohibited from voting. Conservative MP Miriam Cates suggested that when registering to vote people would be able to indicate their need and a suitable form of identification could be issued. That seemed reasonable.

Where Shami went a little awry was in claiming that homeless people would be disenfranchised. Since you need an address to register to vote, in what way are they more disenfranchised by needing to prove their identity?

 

Sweeney is the guy who claimed to have been groped by a Scotch Tory MP at Westminster in 2019, who was subsequently admonished of any wrongdoing despite him being a horny poofter who was searching for dong all night, allegedly.

I’ve spoken to Sweeney a few times up in Springburn as he’s been campaigning to have the old winter gardens rejuvenated.

Think he’s a poofter too and he’s definitely a Taig.

 

Ive voted lots of times and I’ve never turned up to a polling station and someone has stolen my vote.

I bet, no one on this forum has had their vote stolen.

I bet that out of the 40m registered voters (not sure if accurate) that less than 0.01% of folk have had their vote stolen.

This is usual over exaggeration by govt or media telling us a problem exists where it doesn’t.

On the face of it, yeah what’s the problem with producing an ID to vote, but... the problem is with the State, is what else will you need ID for.

Boris was known for being a small govt libertarian. Who the **** is the PM is now is anyone’s guess as it’s quite clearly not Boris Johnson who wrote umpteen articles on Individual liberties and freedoms normally associated with being British.

The same old broken record from those who are so desperate to be in the European Union that they are still living in a country that is no longer taking orders from the unelected Brussels Politburo. They could be living in the banlieue surrounded by immigrants from the former French colonies, enjoying the French tolerance and love of other cultures; and their sophisticated accents.

Everyone that voted Leave must be a xenophobic ‘gammon’ racist with a regional accent, no education and yearning for the days of Empire when the sun would not set below the yardarm without permission from an Englishman. If only the low IQ Remainers had not taken it for granted that they were going to win and turned out to vote, we would not be in this mess.

Whether people in the United Kingdom voted Leave or Remain, they got decisive government leading to quick synthesis of plague vaccines and widespread inoculation, whilst the EU machine prevaricated and left people to die. EU member states could have acted unilaterally for the good of their people but chose instead to sacrifice some of them in the cause of The Project.

 

So no harm in having it then, better safe than sorry
