I did think of Mata but he plays with great intensity and is very focused. Is he the player to keep an eye on the bigger picture I wonder?

Mikel? Loves to give out a rollicking, experienced pro now and starting to lead by example in the middle. Other than that, maybe Cahill.

I think Mikel could do the job and in the circumstances should be given the chance! I know Cech has done the job , but somehow the GK as captain, just doesn't work for me! We need someone outfield , preferably in a midfield role and at the moment there's no one but Mikel to do the job!
A GK as captain when a team needs a leader doesn't work. Ivanovic if he's playing CB, possibly Mikel (quite like that idea). Mata is too far up imo to play captain.
